If Mourinho wants him, he's probably a good signing even if he isn't a player that deserves/can't play week in, week out. His leadership off the pitch and ability to influence would be helpful. He's in between a luxury player and a necessity in my mind. Prior to the "reSergence" of Aurier, he seemed to be a good fit given the price that has come out, but if Serge is born again, then it probably makes sense to spend on DM and LB above all else. And that is a qualified "if".

Injury prone? He’s missed the last 10 games with a muscle injury, prior to that he’s got one of the best injury records in modern day football.

Just because Utd have a shit manager and no team work it doesn’t mean all of their players are shit. Look at Alli, injuries and poor form for 18 months, new manager and he’s on fire again. Our best players have all missed a substantial amount of games yet they’re not crap and in need of being replaced are they.
I stand corrected on the injury prone part. Still very unlike Levy to sign a 31 year old on huge wages.

I’ve not once said he’s shit (and my point that you quoted wasn’t even regarding whether I want to sign him, it was in response to someone saying Matic is a typical Levy signing). I do, however, believe that what our midfield needs is a mobile DM who can get about midfield quickly and make sure that when out of possession, where the ball is, he is. I don’t see Matic as being that. Nothing to do with age either, I just think our inability to shut down opposition attacks needs to be addressed in a different way.

This is exactly what we’re missing. What we do have is a crocked Wanyama, a ponderous, technically weak, Dier and a youthful prospect in Skipp. We really don’t need another lumbering CDM. I’d like us to prioritise this position above all others at the moment and get someone relatively young, mobile and technically decent- someone who will become a regular fixture in the squad over the next 5-7 years, not another stop gap creaking towards oblivion.

No idea who, but there’s plenty more knowledgeable posters on here than me who can probably offer some decent suggestions

That's the problem though isn't it. Who's going to want to let go that player in January.

31 yrs old. A lot of injuries recent years. If it's a short term, bring him but not for the long haul....

Not convinced JM will be interested. He’s very much looking forward. He’s proved that with his back room staff appointments. CDM is such an important role to get right in a JM team, if he can’t get who he truly wants in January, I’d prefer to be patient and wait until the summer.

Think he ends up in Russia or Turkey, maybe Italy like Vidic since most leagues are too fast for him. We need someone much faster than him and Dier.

Not a big fan of this idea but if it helps to get our shit together at the end of a game why not.
In an ideal world I would like someone like him in his prime, whoever that could be.

If?! Mourinho has a short-term fox to have him around, he can’t do no harm. And with Mourinho’s pedigree I wouldn’t then be against it.

As others have mentioned my issue with Matic is he is not particularly mobile. But he is probably a bit more mobile than Dier and definitely has a better passing range and shot on him so all round would still be a modest upgrade

Might be a valuable guy to have if we want to go for top 4 this year and an elite signing isn’t available in January / levy doesn’t want to spend much (both likely) given we are woefully short in this area with Dier let alone if he gets injured

Where did this thread come from? Crazy idea but I guess expected from Mourinho. No doubt he will want Drogba and Ibra as well. Maybe Louis Saha is a available. Nothing like moving the club forward

I think Matic is best suited to Serie A at this point in his career. We could do with the new Kante!

From what I am hearing he wants an established specialist in that department.

We could do with an established specialist who is very much like Kante, in that case. (y)

P.S. I really, really like the look of Tonali from Brescia, but it seems Juve and Inter are very interested, so he'd be a toughie to get over the line if we were in for him. He's more a quarterback than a destroyer, mind you, so maybe wouldn't be the exact partner you'd look for in a double pivot with Ndombele anyway.
