Got to the point in the 2nd half where I actually felt sorry for him. He doesn’t even look like a footballer. Actually looks like a Rugby player trundling around.

That "fastest player" measurement was taken years and years ago. He's probably put on 20 pounds since then. Anyone who's watched us over that time can see that he's not nearly as mobile as he once was.

It's very clear where the biggest potential upgrade to the first XI is. It's got to be our top priority in January IMO. If we had a DM anywhere near the quality of our top four rivals it would completely transform us.

Did Jose once wanted to buy him for 80 million pounds?
Yes, and that is a point that his apologists keep trotting out as if it's proof of quality. I believe the reports said 40 or 50M. It would have been a mistake by Jose but we should have done it then. I imagine ego and not wanting to be seen as a 'selling club' was part of it. Not too mention most on this board would have had kittens at the time. I was not one of them. It's always better to get rid too early than too late. Now every team can see his 'qualities'. Let's hope this WC CB that everyone sees in him materializes. I have my doubts.

So you say it's not a requirement for Dier then use it as a stick to beat him with.

I agree Dier was not dealing with the press very well and that was his fault but given how poor Eriksen was at providing options, retaining the ball and being the 8.5 that JM likes in giving defensive support Dier and Sissoko really had a job on their hands.

I'm not saying Dier played great but he was by far not the weak link today. Skipp and Sissoko would have been completely overrun and left so many gaps it would have been a cricket score
Agreed Sissoko is not helping. Looking at their stats for this game is not pretty viewing.

Getting a proper DM next window is crucial if we want to finish in the top 4. I feel we won't get anywhere near if we depend on Dier

Still the tallest midget in our squad in terms of DMs, but really puzzled by some of his choices yesterday. At times he was pressuring the fullbacks and even the goalkeeper. His main asset has generally been intelligent positioning, but this was strange stuff.

Sad to see his decline so apparent last night. Personally think he should have been given a rest after playing on the weekend as he clearly isn't fit.

For people who are better at spotting these things. Does he seem unfit as in injured or unfit as in needs more games?

He's too big and immobile. Just doesn't move quick enough to affect anything. Ball goes to player near him, he slowly trundles towards said player, ball gets passed to someone else, he slowly trundles over. Ends up bypassing him and he slowly trundles towards the attacker as he shoots. It's painful to watch, he was fucking atrocious.

That was his 11 game of the season and he still looks and plays like his just returning to pre-season, his put far too much weight on and looks slower and lumberous. Not sure where is role is in the squad, way down the pecking order as a CB (foyth, sanchez, verts, toby all better), and nowhere near up to standard as a DM.

He was always immobile and only really able to pass the ball when there was no one within 5 yards of him.

No he’s so slow he can’t even get close enough to foul people.

You’re right, it is painful to watch.

The gulf in class between him and Kimmich as dm's yesterday was nuts, was like they were playing different sports. Really was hard to watch especially as he had the armband. Absolutely awful.

Good game against Burnley - praise
Bad game against Bayern - criticism

This thread is nuts

If he plays well then its good if he doesn't then fans aren't happy DUH ! Why is this surprising .

If you do well at work people will praise...if you do badly people will criticise . So whats your point ?

If you think this stream is nuts ( it isn't) then don't come in here .

Needs to drop back into defence and concentrate on trying to become a reliable centre back.

If not, he can exit stage left January/summer.
