For me, one of the weirdest things in all officiating is that assistants have a >95% success rate for offsides but can't spot a keeper jumping a yard off his line when a penalty is taken, when the ball is stationary and the goal line is literally all they have to look at.

Yes, it should've been retaken because Ryan was off his line, but that wasn't the reason VAR gave for the retake. It's just a mess.

This is so true, it does my head in watching penalties and from the TV i can see the goalie off his line but none of the officials who are less than 5 yards away can.

The thing for me that's annoying is the goal that Sterling scored in the 94th minute yesterday. Like the Son one at Leicester, like the Sheff United one against us.

These are so close decision, if they really have to start drawing lines and and checking elbows and knees, it's a load rubbish. That clearly means no clear and obvious advantage. These are the disallowed goals that are killing me.

If Sterling would have scored that in the 80th, much like us at Leicester mid second half and we would have been 2-0 up. They would have be 3-1 up, game over, the opposing fans are down in the dumps. Instead these decisions then have the counter benefit which no one really seems to consider as this gives such a huge boost to the opposing fans and they go crazy like they've scored a goal and revitalize their team. Because of the pantomime of VAR, the delay, the game stopped, both players staring at the screens. So, if this did happen in the 80th and was disallowed, it's more than likely Chelsea would have had a better chance of pulling level at 2-2.

In the times before VAR, if the lino gives a dodgy offside, it's done in an instance, the opposing fans usually gave a bit of a cheer and the game is re-started in 10 seconds, now it's just all over the show and i have no reason why they have made it this difficult. I wouldn't have moaned one bit if they would have given that Sheff United goal, i actually felt sorry for them as i though it was a bullshit decision and i'm better other teams would, if someone's finger nail is offside. I'm really hoping next year they re-think it like this.

The farcical thing is how can that be disallowed for a foul, yet Lamela against City wasn't deemed a foul?
Have they just changed the VAR rules halfway through the season?

It’s all bollocks to be fair. Did you see Burnley’s goal? Tarkowski was pushing the defender down and knocked the ball on -getting an assist. So he was actually involved in the goal and they allowed it. Pathetic bias tbqfhwy

VAR might be wrong or right with its decisions but they are taking far too long and completely spoiling the flow of games.

I'd rather the flow get slightly disrupted than an incorrect decision been given.

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin, coming down on the side of the football fans, players and pundits against Video Assistant Referees. Ceferin summed up the frustrations of supporters who would rather see the back of it.

“If you have a long nose, you are in an offside position these days,” he said. “Also the lines are drawn by the VARS. So it’s a bit subjective drawing of objective criteria. So our proposal will be - we will discuss this with our referees division - that it is a tolerance of 10-20 centimetres.

“Second thing, we had at UEFA the top coaches two weeks ago, in Nyon. There was Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola, Max Allegri, Carlo Ancelotti, Zinedine Zidane. All the top coaches of European teams, and our referee officer, Roberto Rossetti shows a handball. He says: ‘Handball or not?’

“Half the room said yes. Half said no. So tell me how clear the rule is. We don’t know anything! For example, let me think about the Liverpool game against Manchester City . Was that handball or not?"

Referee Michael Oliver controversially denied Manchester City a penalty in their title clash against Liverpool last month when Bernardo Silva’s cross struck Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold. Jurgen Klopp’s side benefited and went on to win.

“Some referees in England, they don’t even check,” said Ceferin, “In Italy they check for half an hour. You know, it’s a mess. I was never a big fan fan of this. Now these days you see that linesmen don’t even bother to lift the flag anymore. They wait, wait, wait.

At least it sounds like some further understanding will come in soon.

He says long nose, but in the case of Sterling vs Chelsea the other week it's his lean. His feet are on but because of the angle, his elbow or something is off. If one player has broader shoulders than another he will be offside but the other player won't, even if their feet are in the same place. They need to be a bit more sensible. Maybe the 10-20cm tolerance will help.

Is there a new rule where we have to have a VAR inquiry after every goal? Getting ridiculous now with all the delays. Both second half goals at Everton v Chelsea needed a VAR look apparently but why ?

Its not a new rule. Every goal will be VAR checked...

I also suspect that goal needed a VAR check incase it touched Abraham who was offside but clearly didnt hit him

VAR might be wrong or right with its decisions but they are taking far too long and completely spoiling the flow of games.

the biggest annoying thing about it is not only the time they are taking, but in the time it takes for a decision the ref could be at the monitor ready to view it or could view it while VAR are doing their bit and if VAR believe he got it wrong or himself after viewing it again, then unlikely much more time would be wasted (sorry if already suggested).

All well and good until you realise that we need to hand Sheffield United 2 points seeing as they had a goal ruled out by a big toe. :playful:

why would we?

had that goal been given then no one knows for certain the final score. no guarantee they would have held on to a 0-1 lead or scored the next goal to win it 1-2.

How does it feel to be the oldest troll on the internet Lighty?

I'm not a troll I'm pointing out a fact that so many fans and commentators don't realise.

an example, Kane missed his pen v Liverpool 2 minutes later they went 2-1 ahead. if Kane hadn't been awarded the penalty no guarantee the next passage of play would have happened.
