Amazing how just winning the game glosses over the performance so much for so many people on here.

We generally defended very well, were very well organised and extremely committed, but on the ball we were fucking terrible. Son and Alli were awful, Son was particularly terrible. We rarely troubled them on the break, Wolves always seemed to have defenders back in numbers whenever we broke. We hardly ever isolated them in 3 on 2 situations etc. Moura kept losing the ball trying to dribble round the whole team (great goal though). It was one way traffic most of the game. Sure, you could say our tactics were to defend deep and counter, but there is no excuse for our attack and midfield to be so so totally pathetic, we were gifting Wolves back the ball time and again, so there's no way this can be called a great performance..

They also played through our midfield far too easily, Wolves CM were technically on another level compared to our CM of Sissoko and Dier.

There's a lot of work to do and I'm excited about seeing what Mourinho can do with this squad with a couple of reinforcements, but anyone saying today was a great performance is just getting carried away with the final score line/result.
Good job defending is half the game then. It’s also the half we’ve been terrible at so far this season. I know Son and Dele can play better than that, so I’m taking it as a big positive.

Only followed the match and here and it seemed the performance was on a par with Man U and Bayern? Lots of hoof ball? Dier and Sissoko plodding around in centre mid unable to move the ball with any zip and shitting themselves anytime the opposition even thought about pressing?
Love it when I can reply to a post by just repeating one I've made in the past on the same subject:

I'm really enjoying how painful you're finding this. :playful:

Luckily for you, Spurs are going to become a better, more successful club under Jose than they were under Poch, so at least there will be some form of silver lining waiting for you at the end of it. :woot:

Can't even remember the last time we scored an injury time winner, especially in a game that we were by far and away second best. But I like it!!

Wolves were excellent today. Nuno is doing a great job there.

I agree but at the same time I can't agree about it being a great performance as we had too many players who were useless in possession today.

Determined, dogged, tenacious, organised yes, but very very little quality and our attacking players bar Moura for his goal just didn't turn up.

That's what I'm saying, it was a battling performance and you need those in your locker if you want to compete at the business end of the table.

From that point of view it was impressive.

I'm highly confident we're going to achieve big things with Mourinho. He's a winner and its already having an affect so early on.

Agree! You don't need to tell me that, I wanted Mourinho here from the start!

The improved defensive work is definitely something positive to take away from the game. We saw the commitment to defending that has been lacking in us for some time. Some great blocks and players putting their body on the line.

This kind of result can build confidence for sure.

Attacking and especially passing was indeed poor, however I'm willing to put some of that down to the poor conditions and how good (and well organised) a team Wolves are. We need more quality from our attack next week for sure!

Certainly some warning signs, and was weird to see no subs or formation change (extra CM) to try and get a foothold, but it's another tricky game navigated. Our second half of the season run in is looking nice. Fingers crossed we can put in a much better and complete display next week and beat Chelsea at home.

I'll give you that Ajax were better in the first half of that game but they were well spanked in the 2nd half!! That rendition of 'Don't worry about a thing' came back to bite them big time!!

What Dillspur you were disagreeing that our whole plan was about countering?
It's what we did all game unlike Wolves build up play
Who was there to control the ball???
It was quickly out to Son, Moura and Dele
I didnt say it was good like some other games but still that was the plan and although Wolves played relatively well I'm not sure they had actually more chances than we had. But we did win the game. We were countering seeing as we had no true CM and we did use the counter.
Countering means we turned the defence into quickly. We are hitting longer passes these days and more direct.

I disagree that we troubled them on the break. For me, we weren't as quick or incisive (on the break) as we have been previously (under Jose) they always seemed to have players back in numbers, I'm honestly struggling to remember when we actually troubled them on the break.

It was a battle they had more of the ball and I think we were effective to infact as you know we won the game so not sure what you are arguing the point about. The countering?

The point I'm making is we didn't play well, teams win and play poorly all the time this was one of those times.

We were hitting too many long balls and effectively giving the ball back to wolves inviting pressure, and while the plan may have been to hit them on the counter it was executed poorly and IMO we didn't threaten them once (on the counter).

You said the counter was effective I'm saying it wasn't in this game, if we try these tactics and perform them as poorly as we did today, better teams will destroy us.

We defended excellently, admittedly we didn't click offensively but we still managed to score twice and were inches away from a third when not at our best up top.
As we saw last week, when we click we are dangerous on the counter.

Better teams? Wolves hadn’t lost a league match in over 2 months. Maybe they’re not Liverpool but how much better could their form have been going into this one?

Agreed, defensively we were pretty good but when we had the ball and needed to do something with it we were poor.

Wow seeing the Jenas analysis you can see how poor our CM is. Dier and Sissoko just aren’t the answer. If we are to turn into a proper top side those two need to be upgraded badly.

We need Ndombele back and another DM signed

Depressing analysis from Jenas who is bang on. Sissoko and Dier in particular just dont seem to make angles to receive the ball and pass forward.

The positive is it genuinely cant get any worse and if we can recruit well and get Ndombele up to speed it will be a massive improvement

We must be a central midfielder in January

I think you might be disappointed. I don't think we'll be getting a midfielder of note in Jan.
