For me it won't be that football is back, it will be that there is just some form of live entertainment. Can't stand games without fans, they feel truly terrible but it may just be a case of being better than nothing.

I agree. It’s why I haven’t really commented on the whole “football coming back isn’t important” ethos. Whilst I don’t think it should come back as has been mooted, I can see the argument for bringing it back for entertainment and for something to raise people’s spirits (or not).

Yep but VAR has ruined even that!

Going to football now is pretty shit, to tell you the truth, because of it. Again, the match going fans are the last people thought of in regard to that.

The authorities might just find that this virus could have quite an effect on football in more ways than them or us currently realise. I bet there are a lot of fans turned off from the sport. I wouldn’t be surprised to see attendances fall off. And if they start showing matches on tv without full grounds the viewing figures will drop off quite quickly. It’s just not the same.

I've quite enjoyed VAR, a chance to cheer twice

I think the majority who attend games do so for the overall experience, of waking up excited, travelling to stadium, maybe having a few beers with mates before hand and then cheering on your team whether performance is good or bad. it's a full day out for most and provides the opportunity to socialise, and immerse yourself into a activity that you are absolutley passionate about..
Agree with this too, in addition to my comment rather than instead of.

For me it’s a family activity. Dad and uncle had been going since they got here from Cyprus in 70 and 75 respectively, then I started going whenever possible during the Gazza era at about 5 years old, then finally got my own season ticket for 97/98 and have been going since. Add in my uncles two boys in the first decade of this century, and its been the five of us now for over a decade, the three of us for almost three decades, and the two of them for approaching half a century. It’s part of our identity as a family and not having it around right now sucks.

If you think there needs to be a two week pre-season, and 30 days to play the games, you're looking at 300 people per match being tested daily for 45 days. Each match day will have 10 games. that's 3000 people who will need to be tested for the 45 day period - a total of 135K or 3000 tests a day (to cover all match day staff)

As of April 25, the UK has been able to test 20k per day

"All the sports are acutely aware that testing players cannot, though, take priority over front-line staff who are dealing with the coronavirus crisis."

cue palpable and righteous outrage when the PL says they need to test foks

Does anyone seriously believe a 15% of the current capacity will be dispensed to get the PL up and running?!

The season ain't happening by end of June

Most of us live boring mundane lives but once a fortnight you get to be able to shout and holler and generally let your boring self go .
Also for me I get to see my two sons and have a couple of beers and if its a great game it gives you memories that will live with you until you die . My first really great retained memory of games I was at is 1958 the 10/4 game against Everton tho my first game was 1951 I have not because of being so young been able to remember much about those early years only that I loved watching Eddie Baily .
But I can say that generally apart from my family my best memories are from going to spurs games home and away .
I have said that because of the virus I could not care less about football but writing this has reminded me that in fact I miss football badly .

It's not inconceivable that testing capacity could be around 500k tests per day by the end of June. That might still not be enough, but would obviously be better. More difficult questions would be:
  • How many, and how frequent would the tests have to be in the run up to each game?
  • What would happen in the event of a positive test?
Everyone expected to be involved in the game, plus a whole load of stand-bys, would probably need to be tested every day for a week before the first game until 14 days after the last game. If any person tested positive, would they allow anyone they'd been in contact with to they participate any further, or would the continuous testing be enough to give confidence? How would deal with the situation where one club was unable to field a team? Would the other team claim 3 points?

Proper complicated, this one.

I know we take the piss out of the Sunday supplement and the nob journos on there but I am just watching it now and they are actually all being sensible and saying about how unworkable and wrong it is to play games now. Was quite surprised with it being a sky programme that they were so all adamant that it couldn’t be started up again anytime soon.

Football and TV broadcasters can go and suck themselves, everyone loses money.
Thinking back I remember you had the likes of Hudson odoi “self isolating” weeks ago.
And then you get Walker having a gang bang at his pad, at least our lot were out training.
It can’t happen and what we need is for the other leagues to follow Holland and cancel.

I think it will come back behind closed doors, that it can be done relatively safely (especially if squad’s isolated for 30-40 days) and the entertainment & debate will be good for all of us stuck at home.

I don’t think we all need to keep saying saving lives is more important. Of course it is. But no-one would cross the road or drive a car if we were utterly risk averse. We need to manage risk and reduce it as far as possible.

And yes, this won’t be football as we knew it, or anything like the live experience. But it will be a damn sight better than no football.

Bring it on.

I think a lot of tv companies and fans are in for a shock of how shit watching the games on the box will be without us match going fans at games.

I think this is real opportunity for the match going fans to unite and take a stand with the pl clubs on pricing. It will expose how poor it is and how much the tv companies will want full stadia.

I don't know why we seem obsessed in this country with the "integrity" of the sport as if the game in its current form is anything to do with integrity. Where was the integrity when FIFA delegates were taking bribes from Russia and Qatar for world cup bids. Where was the integrity when FIFA fined Bendtner more money for having paddy power pants than a Bulgarian national FA for failing to control racist chanting or players from racially abusing others on the pitch. Where's the integrity in opening up champions League to teams that have never been champions of the national Leagues. There is no integrity in football. Itçs about money, pure and simple. Whilst I would love to see our team play again it would be purely entertainment and people's lives are worth more than entertainment. Premier League can shove integrity right up it's jacksy.

Question, can they be sure if they restart this season, they can finish it?
Say they start the season and 4 rounds of fixtures are played and that means Liverpool are crowned champions. But the thing starts to go mad again, player/s, manager/s , club/s start to get affected again with positive cases. And they have to stop again, how fair is it?
I am all for it starting again, but only if the thing can finish, and fates are decided. If for any chance it stop and gets voided then all other scenarios, finishes are off the table and the season is void.

Exactly, they should be making considerations for how to play next season, not desperately scrambling around for a way to ensure Liverpool finally win the title. Even when the main lockdown ends, large gatherings aren’t going to be feasible for months. Plus there could very easily be a second or more waves meaning further lockdowns.

IMO they should void the season, and make preparations for a truncated season starting next spring and ending in November In time for their stupid Qatar World Cup.

Horse racing will be back on mid May, I've had that confirmed by a few contacts I have in the racing world. It will be held behind closed doors, so if other sporting events are going ahead then it's likely that the PL could also be back behind closed doors.
Had a more specific date given to me now. Seems likely it will be back the 18th May. Also heard a rumour that the Prem could be back within the first week or so of June.

500,000 tests a day is about as inconceivable as it gets. I used to work in a busy, London mircobiology and virology lab. Firstly, there just isn't the staff to run that many tests. It's a very manual and time consuming process. Secondly I have found out through a mate that works at The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine that the plan is to ramp down testing as numbers of those in hospital drops. Also there is no plan to role out community testing. This is due to the capacity not being there.
Just can't see how this can all be incorporated. Just not realistic.

Confirmed F1 will be travelling all over Europe again from July. Serie A teams begin training next week. Rumours horse racing back within a month... I told you all money talks and the plan for the Premier League announcement won't be far away.

Wait till its discovered that once sport is restarted coronavirus cases are being covered up so that it can continue. I bet it will happen, they won't want to end it once its begun.

They should just cancel the season. New season starts in August. Same teams qualifying for Europe as last year as this season is null and void. No relegations. No promotions. No champions.
