Seemed to slot purely into Lo Celso’s role in the midfield 3 when he came on v Newcastle. Would be interested to see if it was needs must of parter of longer term thinking, as I’ve always felt he has the tools to perform in that role but never got the chance.

If we continue to play 433, I think jose will use him as a 3rd midfielder rather than upfront like how he used di maria at real madrid. Also Jose likes to have two players in every position.

In 433 for the midfield we might have : 1. Hojberg(given we buy him) 2. Winks 3. Ndombele 4. Lo celso 5. Sissoko (versatile can slot him in right side of upfront 3 if you want more defensive solidity) 6. Lamela

Front 3: 1. Son 2. Kane 3. Moura 4. Dele 5. Bergwjin 6. New striker

As long as Moura can learn how to play tactically along with kane and son, I think 433 is a fine formation for us ...

I think even dele/lamela playing behind kane and son has its merit also as long as we have fast and pacey full backs on the wings ...

Imagine how riled up people on this forum are going to be when they realise Jose prefers Lamela and Lo Celso to NDombele in that central attacking midfield position, and we end up selling Tanguy before Erik  #meltdown

I think Jose could be planning to reinvent Lamela as a midfielder. We've already seen glimpses of him playing in our midfield 3 in the last two matches as a direct [substitute] replacement for Lo Celso.

He has all the necessary tools to succeed in Jose's midfield —strong dribbling, passing, control, tackling, tenacity, decent pace, and even the ability to shoot from distance.

Most importantly, he has strong ball progression and retention ability that would make him strong in possession, against the press, or on the counter in a midfield position. If you watch his compilations from over the years, you can see how often he drops into midfield and either creates or carries the ball down the pitch for us.

I would love to see it.

Not sure whether it’s needs must for current circumstances or a long term thought but I’ve noticed too.

Could do worse than have Lo Celso and Lamela competing for that role, and then Winks, Hojbjerg, Sissoko and NDombele competing for the other two positions.

I would argue he has one of the best shots from distance of any of our current centre midfield crop.

Also whn dele comes back, where will lamela play?
Where Dele fits in a 4-3-3, or if he even fits at all, is an interesting discussion. But I definitely think he and Lamela could play together.

Unlike Lamela, I think Dele should be played as a winger / forward in a 4-3-3 instead of as a centre midfielder. I know some on here are dead set on him being unable to play as a winger but I think he could be effective there. For me, Dele's at his best when he's able to make deep runs as well as combine with others in the box. He's also a strong header of the ball and could latch onto crosses.

With most of our offensive output from Mourinho having come from counter attacking situations, I think he would be effective on the counter coming from the left or right and combining with our other forwards.

Of course if Dele is playing, we also don't have to utilize a 4-3-3 and he could play as a 10 in a 4-2-3-1 or similar formation. He could also play up top alongside Kane or Son in a 4-4-2. Despite the criticism he's received, he's still our third top goal scorer this season.

I mean, he might not have the same ability of AVB's Bale to shoot from distance, but he has shown a few times that it's a weapon he has at his disposal. This season he used it to great effect against a poorly positioned Ederson, and I even remember him scoring long distance goals with what some claim to be a non existent right foot.

Also, if we qualify to EL, both Dele and Lamela should be seeing enough game time next season (assuming we don't sell either, which I desperately hope we won't).

Lamela has a good long distance shot?? Jesus. He scuffs most. And generally weak. None of our midfield look like goal scorers. N’dombele and lo Celso would if we set up for them.

Was out for dinner with a pal last night. Yes, I have at least one of them. We were discussing The Mighty Spurs at great length, to the point of having a condiment based formation on the table.

Anyway, long story not so short, we came up with the idea of giving Lamela a go at DM. I was sober. He wasn’t. Thoughts?

Our fanbase on Twitter wants Lucas Moura play as DM.

Neither of us were that drunk.

But on Lamela, he covers a lot of grass, fit as a butchers dog when he isn’t getting a hip replacement, loves a tackle, good passer, plays with his head up to see what’s going on ahead of him.

With the “slight” exception of him never having played there before, I’m struggling to see the downside.
