I’d have a bit more sympathy for the supporters had they acknowledged the unacceptable source of their corruptly-bought success, rather than celebrate it as though winning a cup justifies any amount of harm done to innocent people in the process.
It doesn’t sit right with me. Feel sympathy for football supporters sure, but when they failed even to acknowledge let alone sympathise with the innocent people who were damaged in ways that go far beyond watching a football club struggle after years of corrupt success….it just feels that we’re still looking in the completely wrong direction.
Also it proves to me that Abramovich and Putin have for years got what they wanted: pervert sport in order to whitewash the criminal sources of their wealth and influence to blind people to the corrupt and damaging activities underlying their power.
And now Newcastle fans awould in my opinion do well to stop and think whether they really believe it’s worth paying with peoples lives and liberty to avoid relegation, and how these attitudes affect far more people in far bigger ways than a few Chelsea fc employees, as would the rest of the entire structure that supports the worlds most popular and influential sport.
More eloquently put than me. Agreed.
