Tanguy and Sess are exhibits A and B on why assessing for character is critical. The former lacks motivation, the latter conviction. Yes, Sess was unlucky with injuries, but even when fit, he never looked confident or brave. Contrast that with Lamela who also suffered from many injuries, but when fit, he would give 100%.

I don’t remember the Sess who was dominating the Championship as a child seeming particularly short on conviction - think that’s something that happened to him later, whether down to injuries or mental health or who knows what.
