If he has to be the next someone it’s clearly Bale
Nah, don't think he will ever end up being the unit Bale was. Son always had that electrifying pace and movement with a knack for output even if he was inconsistent at first much like Johnson will be.

I might be going mad but i think he is shaping up to be an absolute monster for us.

he's young, still settling and coming off the back of some injuries, is it the price tag as he seems to be getting critiqued a lot more than someone of his stature should be.

Seems like there are quite a few who haven't really understood Johnson's strengths and weaknesses, which is understandable given he's played limited minutes.

Many are disappointed in his 1 on 1 ability, and yes, he is not a Doku type player who will look to dribble his fullback again and again.

However, his pace and directness has already proven to be a big asset for us.

Sheffield United - he was marginally offside, but showed great skill and composure to put it in the net after running in behind the defence.

Palace - he was the main creator for the second goal, headed the ball quickly to Maddison (instead of slowing it down) and made a quick run into the box and assisted Son.

Chelsea - Should have had a brilliant assist (one touch pass with weaker foot) but Son went a fraction too early for his offside goal.

Wolves - Showed great movement from the left-hand side to get past his fullback and behind the CBs to score a tap in at the near post.

City - Great assist for Kulu's goal, where he used his acceleration to create space vs Walker before putting in an excellent cross.

Villa & Arsenal - Was involved in some big chances and was unlucky not to score. He had an individual xG of 1,75 in these two matches without finding the net.

Fans who aren't encouraged by his start in a Spurs shirt, haven't been paying attention, IMO.
This is the post this thread needed.

If this is Brennan Johnson only just warming up, PL clubs and managers iare going to be waking up in the middle of the night in cold sweats before long.

Sort of player if he was around in the days of Walcott, Lennon and Bale people would be fawning over him as being as good as those 4 when they were youngsters. Problem now days is that players with his physical gifts are ten a penny on the wing, what he does have to go with it is a good footballing brain and an unselfish nature meaning he is a lot less head down than most wingers.

I was very underwhelmed when we signed him but despite him not blowing me away with his performances, I've been quietly convinced.

Young, HG, lots of pace and seems to give us an end product somehow most games. Seems like the perfect Son replacement in the long-term to me.

Completely anonymous in 2nd half, was really disappointed with his performance. Offered nothing. He's lucky we don't have many options to replace him as Ange seems reluctant to put in Donley for some reason so Johnson will likely keep starting.

Yesterday was the wrong game for him. He struggles against teams that sit deep. It allowed them to double up on Kulusevski. I think he's going to be one of those players who looks better against better teams because they'll actually try attacking and give him space.

What’s this nonsense he struggles against low blocks , the amount of times he had the opportunity to take on his full back with space to run into was bordering on double figures , him and deki in the first half wasted so many chances by not being direct and constantly coming back on themselves . U never see that from the like of Salah , Diaz , Saka , martinelli, doku, even the likes of Antony Gordon , they are all positive players and full backs nightmares , we made it so easy for West Ham last night . Players need to start growing some balls cos there is. I excuse , good teams face low blocks but you just need to steal a yard and get a cross or shot in . I’m furious with the display last night. Too many games have petered out recently without us testing the opposition.

Last night showed why we badly need at least one top winger who is a genuine 1v1 specialist.

Johnson isn’t a good dribbler and as we saw last night refuses to take his man on. This is the big fear I had when we signed him. Deki on the other side has no explosiveness so he struggles to take people on too.

Johnson can do well in certain matches and if he’s on the opposite flank to an proper dribbly winger he would probably get a bit more space but he needs to seriously work on taking on his man to the byline for low cutbacks/crosses and driving inside for quick combos and shots.

We desperately need an explosive player who wants the ball and wants to take their man on like Diaz, Martinelli, Saka, Doku etc.

Was going to post exactly this. Absolutely spot on. I like Johnson, he seems a positive, very fast player but I’ve never seen him being good 1v1 where he doesn’t have space to just run past his opponent. The jury is still out on Solomon but him aside it’s one thing that is massively lacking in our wide play.

Im not particularly worried about Johnson, I’m not surprised he struggled last night and I think he will probably play better on Sunday where there will be more space. But in general it’s still a position we need to improve as you say.

He does seem to perform better when on the right wing, needs time to develop I guess on the left side

I don’t think it’s a side issue, last weekend against City people were saying the opposite as he was marked out the game and anonymous first half on the right and had plenty of space and saw more of the ball second half on the left.

He has all the ingredients to be a proper player for us.

just needs to have belief, no fullback is going to worry about him if he just turns and passes back all the time.

Deki was massively frustrating yesterday. Similar to villa. He just keeps doing the same thing, and turning back onto his left foot.

Yup. Unless our chances fall to son we are in trouble. We just can’t rely on anyone else to score.
it won’t happen but unless we sign a truly top winger in summer we’ll never challenge. We need 3 top goal scorers at least in the side.
