I'll have to disagree. He's shown nothing to warrant a first team spot for a team (when 100%) that's a potential contender. He's playing out of necessity.Johnson is absolutely a first team player. I don’t think that’s what changed the game the first 10/15 minutes after that sub we looked worse. Brighton relaxed a bit, made a mistake and we got a goal out of that. There was no real shape to the game those last ten minutes. We throw everything at it and Brighton just defended. Start with that team that finished tonight against them, the game wouldn’t pan out like those last 10 minutes.
FFSMy 2 issues with Johnson
1) he doesn’t work hard enough for the team defensively.
2) doesn’t trust himself to take on the full back .
I’m confident he will be a good signing when he has more belief in himself cos when he does take on the full back , 9/10 he beats his man . I see why we brought him and obviously there is a premium for an English player but I’m not too worried about him , had we not had the injury issues then he would have been used more sparingly .
Actually he's English. He chose to play for wales.FFS
He's Welsh not English
He was born in England. His mum's Welsh and his dad is the former Jamaican international David Johnson (ex Ipswich and Forest).Actually he's English. He chose to play for wales.
There’s clearly a player in there, a bit like Richy, just needs something to go for himJust a little too indecisive right now for me, but he'll come good.
Yep and he was born and lived in NottinghamHe was born in England. His mum's Welsh and his dad is the former Jamaican international David Johnson (ex Ipswich and Forest).
I know - he certainly could have played for England. And Jamaica as well. Just pointing out that "he's English" is perhaps a little bit of an oversimplification, but I think we're at risk of straying into a different debate that I've no interest in getting into so I'll leave it there!Yep and he was born and lived in Nottingham
He saw in an interview that he also speaks Welsh.I know - he certainly could have played for England. And Jamaica as well. I’m totally unconvinced by Kulu in the midfield, we end up weakened on the right side and ineffective in moving possession in the midfield. The balance looked better when Kulu got back out right and GLC came into midfield. What does he offer? With a fully fit squad he's on the bench and gets 15 minutes at best.
I'm not seeing it. I've tried and I'm normally fairly positive with players. I thought he was woeful tonight. Not for the first time.
When he went off and Kulu concentrated on the right. The front clicked more. With 10 mins to go.....
This was against a significantly weakened Brighton side with no recognised full back?
He wasn't alone today. But he stood out to me as one of the worst.
Do wonder if some of you consider breaking up with your partner or abandoning your kids every time you're not impressed by them.
I think he’s doing ok and one big positive is that he seems to get involved in big moments in terms of chance creation, even if he spends large parts of the game not involved.
I think with Johnson it’s about teaching him how to best utilise his lightning pace and getting him to have a bit more self belief and aggression in the way he attacks opponents. At the moment he has a bit of the Sessegnon about him, a little timid. However unlike Sessegnon, he has elite tier pace and more raw attributes to work with imo.
He is never going to be the 1v1 specialist winger we need on at least one of the flanks but he can complement our attack nicely with his lightning pace and direct running. We’ve already seen some great examples of how effective he can be, it’s just about getting him to be more involved in games and learning how to be more aggressive in using his skills. He needs to take on his man with pure speed more often for example.
He is only 22 years old, plenty of room for growth and the raw skills are there. I trust Ange will improve him significantly.
If we had a 1v1 specialist on the opposite flank to him I could see that really helping him and it would create space.
I think the issue with Kulu at 10 is his positioning is much higher, he’s almost like a second striker rather than a 10. maddison and lo celso play the role more as attacking 8s, they come deeper a lot to retrieve the ball and link play etc.I’m totally unconvinced by Kulu in the midfield, we end up weakened on the right side and ineffective in moving possession in the midfield. The balance looked better when Kulu got back out right and GLC came into midfield.
