his stock is rising all the time, up there alongside Gazza, Cliff Jones and Ginola for me now.

only players I would rank ahead of him are Blanchflower, Greaves, Mackay and Hoddle

He's flavour of the month right now so i'd expect a lot of people will feel he's a legend or right up there but for me he's nowhere close. Yet. Lets have another year or two of him and that might change but right now I feel he's only now scratching the surface of realising his potential. So yeah, a couple of years of him playing for us, at the levels he's currently achieving would be good.

And I wouldn't put Ginola up as high as that either.

I fully expect to receive mass disagree's but them's my onions.

I was wondering the other day whether he's better than Ginola.

Head obviously says he is better (been performing at his best for longer, against better teams, and scores more goals) but my heart (possibly because I was only 12 when Gin was lighting up the league) says he isn't.

Ginola was more graceful whereas Bale is more athletic (though people forget Daveed was as strong as an ox in his prime).

No , you make a lot of sense

But Bale has been with us for quite a few years now, more than Klinsmann - Van der Vaart and Ginola

No, almost certainly agree. Although, in terms of realising his potential, it's clear he does that in individual games. It's just that he needs to find the consistency to do it more regularly across a season or more to be considered a proper legend. I'd say Bale is close to surpassing Ginola - although has a way to go to match Chris Waddle.

He doesn't rank anywhere yet. He's a very good and developing player
but needs to perform at this level for an extended period.
His form and work rate are very patchy and even last night when he was MOM by default
his two wonderful strikes didn't add up to a legendary performance.
He's shaping up though and if he leaves at the end of the season
he will become the legend that got away.

I cannot believe some of what i read on here at times, he is undoubtedly a good player and could well be on his way to be put alongside the likes of some players mentioned BUT he's on a purple patch and until he adds a lot more consistency imo i do not even rate him in the top 10 players i feel are Tottenham greats.

I pretty much agree with these guys. Definitely not a legend for me yet, not too far off, but not there yet. For me I need to see him playing consistently at this level across an entire season and beyond.

That he has... but then I wouldn't put either of those three up in the legend bracket either. I loved Daveed when he was here, he was a ray of sunlight in an otherwise overcast era of the club, and he was a joy to watch.

But when you say "greatest ever" you are talking about the likes of pretty much the entire '61 team, Ardiles, Roberts, Perryman, Waddle, Gilzean, Lineker, A&C's namesakes... and anyway the whole thing is subjective, because are you talking about actual ability, or impact on the team, trophies? Difficult to judge from person to person. For example Ginola was technically light years beyond Bale's ability. But Bale's physical attributes batter Ginola's. Ginola carried us for at least 2 years, Bale has carried us for large parts of this season... And above them all I think most people will agree that Waddle knocks them both into a cocked hat.

Horribly boring word to use but... subjective.

I think there needs to be some distinction between our best ever players and our biggest legends. Talent-wise Bale is in the higher echelons.

It very much depends what he carries us to on his shoulders at the end of the season. 4th place and Europa would put him up there. 3rd place too.

No disrespect to Wales but he will also probably have to suffer not been able to show his talents on the world stage, like some of the true greats have been able to do.

for me he isnt at Spurs 'legendary' status yet but given the global nature of the game now he may just be the biggest global star we have ever had. Oh btw fine player that he was Ginola not even close to being a legend imho

I agree, I dont think you could class Stevie Perryman or Gary Mabutt as among our best ever players, but they are true legends at the club.
Pat Jennings was both, even though he went over to the dark side, at Arsenal. Where as Ray Clemence was among this countries best ever keepers, but no one really talks of him as a Tottenham legend.

Gareth Bale has everything. If it was a video game his stats would be nearly full on each category, as if someone cheated and created there own player

Pace
Strength
Pass
Shooting accuracy
Shot Power
Freekicks
Heading
Dribbling
Movement
Defending (if he can be arsed)
Stamina
Isn't really injury prone (touchwood X 1000000)

all he is lacking is vision and consitancy, once he has those two, and completed his training with us he will be invincible. He'll be the Best player to play for the club I have seen i'm sure. Before the oldies go insane, not old enough to have seen hoodle woddle etc
