Dembele played as DM without Wanyama and Dier too and was good at it. The lack of creativity issue, well, just look at the team since he’s gone, we score less, we concede more. It’s not rocket science. Power, controlling the midfield gave us such a platform to build on. The Poch double pivot wasn’t perfect, but it was highly effective.

The priority in this window was a DM followed by a CF and then a LCB, we end up with a box to box player on loan and a wide attacker, oh well !

I dont disagree with that but he mostly didnt play as a DM. We were effective because our defence, our DMs and Dembele at CM were crunching the opposition,we were pressing all over the field and it worked and the forwards got the benefit but it took a lot out of us. The fatigue etc the injuries etc.
I'm sure Poch wanted to change after experiencing Klopps football. We did buy 4 quasi attackers in the summer but I think injuries aside I'm not sure that Poch knew how to develop us to be more on the front foot.
The Bayern game gave me a huge clue.

It's one thing to go without a DM if you press hard and efficiently and further up the pitch but something entirely different if you're going to sit deeper, soak up pressure and then try to hit on the counter attack. Mourinho has always tried to incorporate a quality DM in his teams and our current style would indicate to me that we need

Yes, that's a fair point. I think I was working from an assumption that we're not 100% certain yet how Jose will play, but thinking about it again, I guess we do know how he'll play: the same as he's always played. I think I'm still pining for the period when we we had Rose and Walker bombing on, nutso pressing all over the pitch, our front 4 or 5 rampaging defences, and DM's were a secondary thought. Keep hoping those days will come back, but I suppose they're not.

I really want us to buy a Kante style DM. Just someone who thinks defence first, constantly running and isn’t concerned with being a playmaker.

Agree DM is our biggest issue, not convinced by Dier, if we had a DM it would free up our attacking talent which I think is more than enough to cover for Kane out. Without a decent DM we have Moura etc back winning tackles which makes us so laboured going forward. If we were to get an average forward to cover for Kane and no DM I don't see our 2nd half of the season improving much.

I think this style of player, one who can effectively screen the defence and cover gaps, and quickly recycles the ball, will compliment Ndombele and Lo Celso perfectly in a three man set up.

The closest I can think of to a Kante type is Florentino Luis at Benfica. Currently out of favour due to their manager utilising a 4-4-2 formation, he was considered by many of their fans as just as great a prospect as Joao Felix.

He was linked with a loan move to AC Milan recently but that hasn't materialised. He'd be one hell of a signing; 20 years old, 6'0, with wonderful defensive capabilities and positional sense. He needs to improve his distribution, but there are few prospects out there more defensively capable in that area of the pitch than Luis.

Mourinho was excited about Dier when he came so not sure about whether he would have changed his mind about the position knowing how much he loves a tough defence and midfield

True, but he seems to have moved away from Dier during his time here.
But if Jose genuinely wanted a DM then surely he would have prioritised it this month rather than making Lo Celso permanent and bringing in 2 other non-DM midfielders?
It's not exactly the hardest, or most expensive position to fill compared to creative players.

agree with this based on what I’ve seen of FL. maybe (hopefully) this is the type of deal we’re working on for the summer.

With our HG quotas, I think Rice is our only option when West Ham go down.

I think Rice actually has a well rounded game and offers a lot. I’d be happy if we were to sign him but it would likely be at the expense of the likes of Dier or Skipp.

Press resistant, technical and skilled, good passer, large physical presence. Think that describes an ideal Mourinho dm, it also describes Sander Berge. Missed out on him big time imo.

Well it is and it isnt. Creativity is much more difficult and elusive. But finding a DM with the presence if a Van Dyke or at least someone who will solidify the defence rather than a future Watford player is the ticket to the CL.
Easy?

Truth is we will have a better shot for it in the summer.
Tanganga by the way might be the ticket
But....
