Surely the biggest question with the Aguero penalty is when he is running away from goal and in the penalty box....why put in a challenge in the first place...just use your body to force him out of the box without sticking your foot in...not rocket science..

I agree and by the same token, no contact doesnt mean no foul. If a player is rushing at you and you got to hurdle him and literally dive over him (instead of y'know get clattered) then thats a penalty/foul.
No, not buying it. My specific understanding of the laws isn't good enough to contradict you, and I understand and sympathise with your point, but that is just a licence for divers to get away with it. (It's how many on here used to justify Bale's dives just because he played for us.).

Did you just make up a brand new rule or something? Because otherwise this is a wild new spin on fouls that i wasnt aware of and i look forward to seeing in action.

Ok ive looked at the rules as I was surprised by the responses, i thought it would be perhaps a given what I said but evidently not. The below is a snippet.

A direct free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any of the following seven offences in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force:

  • kicks or attempts to kick an opponent
  • trips or attempts to trip an opponent
  • jumps at an opponent
  • charges an opponent
  • strikes or attempts to strike an opponent
  • pushes an opponent
  • tackles an opponent
My initial post was merely pointing out that if a player is running in on goal and someone is charging at him tackling head on and they lose their balance trying to evade having their career ended - is that a foul? Damn straight it is in my view.

Are you not allowed to tackle an opponent now then? That seems a bit harsh.

I don’t think it took them 2 minutes with the Man C pen, I think they got fed up waiting for the ball to go out of play so eventually told the ref to stop play. And they conclusively showed Aurier did not get the ball. Everyone - pundits, even Jose - all agreed it was a penalty.

Yeah, I'm struggling to see where he got the ball

30 seconds in is the best angle.

Both Aguero and Son make the most of the contact they receive

Anyway, villa fans

I went to Spurs v Man City yesterday as my Dad’s a Spurs season ticket holder and he couldn’t go. Have to say the stadium is very impressive, if a bit showy. I was expecting a City win but unfortunately that wasn’t the case – there’s nothing worse than happy, smug Spurs fans chanting “Yid army” every 2 seconds.

_____________

Spurs previous line-ups don't look too imposing in midfield. I guess the one guy we would struggle with would be N'Dombele, if anyone, but he has only been a sub. Claret & blue glasses maybe, but I think we should be expecting a point at home.

__________

We do well against jose teams at vp

Bang on. And it is Aurier's weakness, that rash decision making that surfaces every 2-3 games and usually results in a goal conceded. There was absolutely no need to dive in, Carragher's live reaction when he made that tackle says it all. If Aurier can eradicate that rash decision from his game he will be an awesome RB! Let's hope Jose can tame him.

Son's "tackle" on Moses in the League cup final is actually a prime example, there was no contact and Moses dived over it

Not just every 2-3 games, Aurier makes a mistake like that every single game. We're just lucky not every one of them directly leads to a big chance or goal against.

Arsenal fans complaining about diving always tickles me - anyone want to guess which team has been booked most for diving across the last two seasons?
They must have severe memory loss of Pires and Henry playing for them

When you consider Son was sent off for kicking up towards a player and didn't particularly make contact, it's all swings and roundabouts innit? Personally I'm fed up of, historically, being dicked by people cheating, and our players being too nice to do the same. The past two years we've definitely bought into "the dark arts" - What's amusing is the reaction of other teams' fans when we do. Like Liverpool fans complaining about Kane and Dele diving. As if they haven't had decades of the likes of Michael Owen, Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres, and now in the present time Salah going down like a cheap ho. Steven Gerrard's dive against Sheffield United that one season mid-2000's is potentially one of the worst dives I've ever seen.

So in summary, fuck 'em all.
I give you the master of the dive and supreme hypocrite

It's called impeding or formerly obstruction. Kane dived over Karius in the 2-2 at Anfield but Karius didn't touch him, it doesn't make it any less of a foul just because there's no contact.

It really isn't. Obstruction was/is a completely different thing. You see it several times a match when players 'shield' the ball and it's rarely, if ever, penalised.

FIFA Rule 12
Fouls and Misconduct clearly states that an indirect free-kick should be given if a player impedes or obstructs an opponent. Impeding the progress of an opponent means moving into the path of the opponent to obstruct, block, slow down or force a change of direction by an opponent when the ball is not within playing distance of either player.

If you're not letting your opponent get the ball in an unfair manor then if it's not obstruction then what is it called?
