I knew exactly what I was setting myself up for, given this forum’s ability to deify any player we miss out on. He was decent but gives the ball away consistently and goes to ground far too easily, and in the return fixture at the Lane he was a shambles, got totally outplayed by our midfield.

With the possible exception of Dele, I don’t see who he replaces in our team. He’s not a CM as some people seem to think, and he’s not the first 11 upgrade some people are imagining. As soon as he played for us all his faults would be not only recognised but in the usual style, they’d be magnified beyond belief into reasons why he needs “replacing” or “upgrading”.

Still, best thing about that post was that it only mainly got hit with a ton of Disagrees and generally sensible replies from people with different opinions - which is exactly what the forum is for. Don’t mind that at all.
My favourite was the 'We wood of won the CL if we bought him grrr Levi tight ****' post.

Just Watched the game on catch up and Jesus we don't like making things easy for ourselves.
Woeful finishing from just about all of our front players (mainly Dele, Son and Moura; the triangle of frustration)
Kane can't return soon enough with that finishing!
Lloris still struggling with bad decisions leading to indecision and eventually no decision...

A welcome return for Davies who didn't let us down.
Dier did what we expected played catch-up closed slowly and offered little in possession..

Bergwijn grew into the game and looks like he'll only get better and another decent cameo from Gedson.

For all of Grealish's good play he is so unlikeable and always looking for contact (aka diving)

Anyway a last minute win is a good reward for not giving up.

Fucking exhausting watch though...

We need to go back to controlling games and looking as good as our quality is.

Winks is supposed to be that player (control) but despite playing well, it doesn't happen. Equally we need a destroyer in the middle.. We saw more from GlC in ten mins than dier all game and I'm huge dier fan. Especially when he sits and blocks space.

I think getting ndom fit is key. I feel he holds the ball so well and we don't look weak in the middle. GlC is a must although that's not your classic DM and pivot mid (maybe a good thing).

I hope we see that change in the CL game as we have such talent

If a Klopp or a Guardiola (or a number of younger, more radical managers we could list) had replaced Poch, you would have seen something more by now in terms of how they wanted us to play. It may have been a very incomplete jigsaw puzzle, with just as many mistakes (if not more) but I believe we would be seeing more green shoots by now.
Remind me again how Klopp and Guardiola did in their first seasons for Liverpool and City respectively?

That's not what happened either. The only bit of ITK I'll ever have is that Grealish thought he was a Spurs player. It was the Villa takeover that put the definitive end to that deal.
Can I extrapolate from that info that the Villa takeover enabled them to offer him a desirable enough new contract for him to stay, because he did sign a new contract and that's what put an end to the negotiations and rumours about him joining us?

The underlying fallacy and false-fact all over the thread is that we "missed out" on signing Grealish and, secondarily, that this resulted from offering an inadequate transfer fee.

You can only "miss out" on a signing if the player actually moves. If a player joins another club for a higher fee or a bigger salary, then we "missed out", although often that's justifiable in value for money terms.

If a player chooses to stay put, no one has "missed out". People seem to think Grealish had no say in the matter! It's not as if we could have forced him to join us. He signed a new contract, which may have resulted directly from the takeover.

Wins over style with me at the moment, it would be nice to get some control in the middle of the pitch but it would help if we could get some our key players off the treatment table...things would look very different if we had a fully fit Kane, Ndombele and Lo Celso out there so not a concern for me.

What is concerning though is our defence still play like amatuers, Toby looks like he can't run and Lloris is too hesitant, Aurier is Aurier and collectively we still aren't defending properly...all in good time I guess?

It does feel like eventually things will come home to roost and we won't be able to bail out our defence for mistakes. It also worries me that I don't think we can honestly name our best back 4. I think there's an argument to say that Tanganga is our most consistent defender yet we don't even know position wise where he fits in to accommodate 3 other defenders.

For all his talent, there have been question marks about Grealish's character, albeit mostly some years ago. It does look like he has matured, but he is very much the big fish in a small pond and I clearly he relishes that. Whose to say how he'll react when he isn't the main man when he does move on.

He would have been a steal at 25 million, no question, but in terms of the actual players, I wouldn't trade him for Lo Celso or Ndombele, provided the latter sorts out the fitness issues.

I was very impressed by Grealish, he isn’t content to just aimlessly put ball in the box, he waits and looks to actually pass it to someone. We really need someone with that composure and awareness.
We do, his name is Giovanni Lo Celso.

That's the Beauty, i thought the same, especially after we started squandering loads of great chances, but this Spurs just keeps on giving, and I'm Loving it.
Speak to me after a loss and I might have a different outlook.
Looking past that, the games are just great spectacles. There's no lull. We've got 2 modes invite a shit ton of pressure or all out attack. It's fucking spectacular.
Even when we were winning under the great Mauricio, there were matches, especially against lesser teams, where it got boring because the result was almost a forgone conclusion.
Nowadays anyone can rock up and know they have a chance, so they actually play. No one comes to defend against us anymore.
I know it's all about winning nowadays, and i would love us to win a trophy, but there's a certain joie de vive about watching a game on the edge of your seat. I can't explain it.
I don't what I'm trying to say but I'm Loving Spurs atm.
You some sort of a masochist?

So. An exciting game, great to watch with end-to-end action, a ridiculous number of chances and five goals. I hated every minute of it.

Playing with absolutely no control; going toe-to-toe with a relegation candidate and, in terms of general play, coming off second-best; winning because of a dodgy penalty and a defender's fuck-up that Aurier would have been proud of. A very, very long way from what I hope to see.

Fucking shambles.

We all see things differently. Well you and I certainly do. We should have scored at least 5 today.
