Sissoko starting. I will weep 24/7 if he is still starting every match next season. Good squad player but we need much better.
On the other hand a Lo Celso - Hojbjerg axis would be quite nice, but of a Redknapp throw back but between them pretty much a complete skill set for a CM2 where the intention is to retrieve the ball deep and move it forward quickly.

Has a player ever left Saints that their more vocal fanbase haven't utterly trashed?
We’re talking about a fanbase who demonised Hoddle (who was great for them and saved them from the drop) when he left to join his boyhood club for whom he’d been at from childhood up to the age of 29 and won multiple trophies.

We aren’t any better. This place overwhelmingly felt that the losses of Carrick, Modric, Keane and Bale would at worst be easily mitigated and at best not really affect us.

If we buy him I hope to god we play him at the bottom of a 3. Almost every team that's any good plays 4-3-3, and if you have a proper DM I'm not sure why you wouldn't with the CMs that we have at our disposal. Ndombele and Lo Celso in front of him means that all he has to do is win the ball back and give it to them to play with. Get some decent fullbacks in and GG. If he plays in a 2 I'll be far less confident because it means that he will have to do more work moving forward with the ball throughout a game.

3 in midfield has been the obvious choice for us for months with the players we have and the ones we need. However, ever since Dembele left, Dier's form went down the pan and Wanyama fell to bits we've had 2 managers who've insisted on playing 2 in CM. Just lately, Mourinho played 3 and then the 442 setup v Arsenal and we looked way more solid than we have for months. IMO we've suffered badly from setups designed to get Dele and Son on the pitch at the same time and I wouldn't be at all surprised if we revert to that once they're both fit. I'm not keen on Hojbjerg in a 2 but he's probably better than what we have currently from a defensive perspective.

I think is good business and if possible would try to bring a high upside young guy alongside him. I dont think he is quite that quality, but from Mourinho's past midfielders, the closest in style would be Samir Khedira(high energy, decent technique and a smart player).

He is a bit like Matic and Cambiasso as well... Though Cambiasso is more hardcore and rough tackler

Along with Hojberg, if we can swap Sissoko with Kondogbia our midfield will be much stronger and skillful next season ... Kondogbia is available for 20-25 million ... Kondogbia is similar to Sissoko in terms physique and athleticism but he is much better on the ball and got superb passing range as well .... Also he can play as left back or in left sided winger role very effectively as well because of his supreme dribbling skill ....

He is a tidy technician in central midfield that has evolved into a more defensive player over the last 5 years. Claude Makelele he ain't.

On his passing ability, it's not just the stats, it's what I have seen and this is backed up by Saints fans.

I've found an example here on Saintsweb from September-October 2019 before his contract stuff before anyone mentions that they are just complaining because he's leaving.

'Watched him quite a bit in the game before last and he has a tendency to play with his head down and tries to muscle (best way I can describe it) his passing. It's almost as if he's a step behind and has to rush what he's doing. You get what you pay for though, if you look at those players at City and Liverpool who pass and move effortlessly, they also cost 4-5 times what Hoj did. '

'I've always said Hoj's biggest weakness is his passing it's always been very poor. Anytime he has to do more than lay off a 5 yard pass he seems to struggle. His passing was like that long before Ralph turned up with his play the ball forward quickly philosophy. '

'Probably just me but I have never seen why all the fuss and gushing about PEH. Quite often when watching he seems to give the ball away and set the opposition up for a counter attack. His passing is dreadful and puts us under pressure too much. Romeu seems to have fixed that and be back to his best. Not sure if PEH has reached his ceiling - an adequate, but not good and certainly not great, player.

Certainly cannot see why any top teams would be seriously taking a look at him.'

'we have never adequately replaced Schneiderlin as holding midfielder.'

'Massively overrated player. Said it for ages he just works hard similar to Long, no quality. '

'Never rated him I have seen lads at 5 aside able to pass a football better... Overrated by many I call it how it is he is crap and offers nothing... Change my mind. '

This is the opinion of two saints fans I know too. They always mention how poor he is on the ball and how cheaply he gives it away.

I think his ball winning ability is good but if we have aspirations of being a top 4 club and more again, he needs to be comfortable in possession, we can't afford another player who can't pass the ball properly or constructively.

I’m guessing that Levy will bring up these comments from the Saints fans when doing the negotiations with the Saints Chairman, in the hope that it might lower the fee.
