...and pissing almost a billion away on buying shares in a bank prior to its collapse of course...
Say what? Like a billionaire is gonna lose his fortune by backing a failing bank! Unless there is a serious plot like oceans 11

I really don't like the sound of this appointment.
Not that we are going bust (Lewis wouldn't allow that), but he might be here to balance the books in a way that we are not going to like.
I’ve had the same trepidation about the appointment but I don’t think we would have made the signings we’ve made so far if we were in real financial trouble.

Balancing the books can be accomplished by any COO of even an average pedigree. I really don't think this chap has been hired to do something that perfunctory and mundane. His background clearly indicates that, as Liam Neeson would say, he has a certain set of skills. The type of skills and experience needed when you're considering profound operational changes, investments, buyouts, mergers, sales, etc.

I could be completely wrong. But if we are simply making suppositions based on prior jobs, then it seems to hint at some big changes over the next 18 months or longer.

Any ITKs got any inside info on the reasons for this appointment? There must have been some previous internal discussions about his appointment and the thinking behind it.

Wouldn’t be surprised if this type of appointment is also to help Levy with getting his sponsorships over the line. Obviously we have an opening for a stadium sponsor and the shirt sleeve sponsor that Levy has yet to find a suitor for.
TBH getting a good sponsorship deal during the current climate will be difficult

Conventional wisdom would say yes but certain businesses have made huge money during this time. I think a stadium sponsor would be very unlikely with people likely not going to be in it. That said more TV eyeballs might make a shirt sleeve sponsor a more attractive proposition.

you guys are just conspiracy theorists by nature. Nothing has to be up. We are a huge and an incredibly well run business (that’s why we qualified for the ridiculously low rate government loan). Bringing in Birch is just us increasing the ability to run the club well. It really doesn’t have to be over a sale or us being financially fucked

We’ve bought 2 guys in 3 months into the boardroom that seem to specialize in sales. Just another wishful thinking conspiracy theory or putting 2 and 2 together?

We already balance the books in a way people don't like. This change up is nothing but positive imo.

I'd imagine he's been hired as much for who he knows as what he knows. Sounds like he has a very extensive network of contacts in both football and finance.

Would be the worst possible point to bail out surely?

It seems to me that we’re barking up the wrong tree with most of our guesses as to why Birch has been brought in.

The most likely explanation is, as is usually the case, the simplest.

I expect it’s simply a recognition of the growing scale of THFC as a business.

Its become a multiple conglomeration, with football at its core but with a stadium that’s far more than just somewhere for supporters to come and watch games; it has all sorts of other interests, merchandising, entertainments, financial management, events, property, its NFL ambitions, its online and other media activities, and more.

And I don’t think there’s any doubt that Levy wants this to continue expanding, because that’s how to realise the potential value he’s been working on more or less ever since he got Involved.

And as with any company of this size and, more importantly, potential, you would expect there to be many people with a range of financial and other business skills involved at board level, each with their own expertise, each with their own areas of responsibility, each working within an overall corporate plan, but within their own set of defined goals. And each of the different strands of activity needs concentrated dedicated management. You need a team of high-level people to do that.

I think it’s simplistic, naive even, to imagine that he’s been brought in to do something as narrow as “balance the books“, or as dramatic as selling the whole thing to someone else.

And as the business grows, you can expect more appointments of this type. We shouldn’t try to read too much into it every time it happens.

Yep. Plus I think they are committed to improving the area. I don’t believe it is a whole load of hot air. I’ve said it for years, Levy’s real legacy could be improving the area beyond all expectations. The stadium is just the start of it.

Besides, anyone expecting us to be bought by someone with endless funds willing to plough it into the club hasn’t really been paying attention. There is no way we get that amount of luck. Thats just not the kind of good fortune we get.

Do you all think Amazon buying the naming rights to the stadium is possible?
I don’t really see an upside for Amazon. They don’t need more people to know who they are, as everyone does. They’ve not really got any competition to pull away from. And they don’t need to cleanse their reputation. Just don’t see any reason why they’d spend the money.

Jeez you guys, it's not like Birch is replacing Matt Collecott. If/when he's replaced with a battle hardened M&A specialist from Rothschilds/Allen & Overy/PWC then you should raise an eyebrow
