If we do get Bale it will be the classic Levy 'gift' signing.

VDV, the wheelbarrow around Spain, all the last minute deals...Levy lives for this shit.

Even if Bale is a little past it, extremely expensive, and in a low priority position, there's a part of him that just really wants to do this deal for the sheer glory and excitement of bringing him back to the club.

Personally don't think it's a particularly smart deal but hell it would be exciting as fuck and, even just on loan, it would be absolutely box office in a way no signing we've made has been since the mighty Bongani Khumalo donned a lilywhite shirt on that fateful day in 2014.

JJ:

It sits solely with the chairman and depends on his whim- agree it’s the best chance we have however if you want my opinion I would say it won’t happen but as a fan too I would absolutely love it if we got the same Bale we had before !

If it’s ever gunna happen, it’ll be deadline day purely cos Levy could squeeze Madrid. No point worrying about it for a while

Let's hope it's JJ's personal opinion and not his poo-pooing factual opinion - I wonder how much of the old Bale is left though?

The degree to which Madrid will contribute to his wages will surely make all the difference. I trust JJ when he says that Bale is willing to come, and I'm sure Levy would love it to happen as well, but unless Madrid are willing to make major concessions just to get him off of their books and out of their dressing room it won't be possible for us. The way things have shaken out this summer I suspect they'll be willing to make some form of a payoff to get shot of him, just a question of whether it will be sufficient for us to afford to pick up the rest.

JJ says bale would play for us again
Just a hunch, but I reckon given Madrid's stance on the situation regarding Bale, I wouldn't be at all surprised if he is chomping at the bit to come back - in fact, I'm sure I read somewhere that he has told his agent "to make it happen". Anyone confirm that was itk?

Then frankly it's on Bale, if he would want to play for us again, clearly Madrid don't want him, he'll have to probably compromise on his wages. I'm not sure I would find fault with the club for not banging 300k salary for him.
