I don’t see this one. Have we had anything really firm? (other than the obvious natural reaction from you lot)

yea, but they both play in the right side.

Think we need to get this Left Footed Centre Back obsession out of our minds. Sure its a bonus, but you are talking about a talent pool. Transfermarkt ranks Dier would be #60 for Centre Backs. The number of left footed Centre Backs ahead of Dier at 60 would be 13.

If a player is comfortable on the ball, they can play on the left no issue. Leadly King did it for years. As did Terry and another centre half who should not be mentioned.

Exactly. Mourinho didn't have any left footed cb at Real, at Chelsea and Blind/Rojo weren't crucial for his United team too

I didn't say so with the intention of implying that it would have to be a left footed CB in the left side, rather trying to pass the idea that Ruben is a player accustomed to the ins and outs of playing the interior right side of the back four. and that a change can result in some adaptation time and/or costly mistakes.

I know he's been considered one of the bright young CBs in football, but I have to admit I've never been impressed with him whenever I've seen him.

I hear you. Especially if were going to regularly lineup with a back 3.

Benfica fans definitely against the idea of this and reckon it only happens for the 80m euro release clause.

Dias or another top CB would give us the flexibility to play a 3-4-3, 3-5-2, 4-3-3 & 4-3-2-1. Which I love. You base you formation on the opponent and players fitness/availability.

Basically a core squad of 24 with a Austin or Whiteman, Cirkin, White, Gedson, Clarke around as backup youngsters who can also go on loan. Gazzaniga, Rose, Foyth, CCV, Lamela get sold. And yes this would fit into the HQ Quota.

3-4-3
GK Lloris (Hart)
RCB Alderwireld (Tanganga)
CB Dier (Sanchez)
LCB Dias (Davies)
RWB Doherty (Aurier)
CM Hojbjerg (Winks)
CM Lo Celso (Ndombele)
LWB Regulion (Sessegnon)
RWF Bale (Moura)
CF Kane (New Striker)
LWF Son (Bergwijn)

3-5-2
GK Lloris (Hart)
RCB Alderwireld (Tanganga)
CB Dier (Sanchez)
LCB Dias (Davies)
RWB Doherty (Aurier)
CM Hojbjerg (Sissoko)
CM Lo Celso (Winks)
AM Alli (Ndombele
LWB Regulion (Sessegnon)
SS Son (Bergwijn)
CF Kane (Bale)

4-3-3
GK Lloris (Hart)
RB Doherty (Tanganga)
CD Alderwirled (Sanchez)
CD Dias (Dier)
LB Regulion (Davies)
CM Ndombele (Sissoko)
DM Hojbjerg (Winks)
CM Lo Celso (Alli)
RWF Bale (Moura)
CF Kane (New Striker)
LWF Son (Bergwijn)

4-2-3-1
GK Lloris (Hart)
RB Doherty (Tanganga)
CD Alderwirled (Sanchez)
CD Dias (Dier)
LB Davies (Regulion)
DM Hojbjerg (Winks)
CM Lo Celso (Sissoko)
RWF Bale (Moura)
CAM Alli (Ndombele)
LWF Son (Bergwijn)
CF Kane (New Striker)

Currently, our CB list is Toby, Sanchez,Dier,Tanganga,Foyth, CCV.

We are getting lot of offers on Foyth - we might sell him permanent. Probably CCV too. Toby & Dier have signed a new deal-cant see them leaving anytime soon.

If either Dias or Kim Min Jae comes in, we still would have 5 CBs - which is a bit too much. It hinders progress of Tanganga.
If we bring in 5th CB, surely we have let one more go on loan or sold surely.... ?
Tanganga is what, 19/20?

Toby has a limited shelf life at 31, and would likely be phased out over the next couple of years.

I can't see JT's progress being hindered at all if we replaced 2 with 2, if anything it would force him to up his game with quality competition.

Quite simply, if his game is good enough, and I believe it will be, then he'll get plenty of opportunity. If he can't up his game to a level where he's putting pressure on any quality we bring in, then he's not making the desired progression anyway.

I think there is no doubt we need a commanding and talkative centre back. From watching the documentary Mourinho wants players speaking to each other and communicating well. Something I feel has been missing for a while and without a proper defensive midfielder purchased will be necessary going forward. I wonder what his English is like as that could make quite a difference if we were to get him, which sounds complicated anyway.

We need an upgrade on Toby, not potential. Someone who can be the boss of Dier and Sanchez, not be their apprentice. I am concerned with how Toby has really dropped off physically the last 18 months. Doherty, Toby, Dier, Davies ... not much pace in our back line. Tanganga is one for the future and will be better suited at FB for the next season or two as he learns the game.

Most Portuguese have decent to very good English so I can't see it being a problem. I agree with what youre saying

I know Levy said the loan we took was just to tide us over and not for transfers, but I always felt that wasn't likely to be true.

The BoE's £175 million emergency loan was very short term, and is due to be repaid in full in April 2021. Although there's mention of the possibility of extending it for another 12 months, this would only be if the Covid pandemic was still screwing the club's revenues.
