So you ignore that he got stuck in (yellow card), was the best passer through the lines, showed outrageous skill, tenacity and then awareness to set up the chance for the goal?

This is why we can’t have nice things....

No I am not ignoring it he was unlucky to be booked and on the ball he is good but its when we haven;t got the ball that he offers nothing and with the side set up as it is it leaves us exposed - its not only his fault - but a midfield player with the way we play needs to do more defensively - that is the question about him with that formation on the ball fine it was good skill for the goal and he offers that but overall can you pick him in that formation and with the players we have?

CDM is what unlocks everything. In a perfect world I’d plonk the Dele money on Zakaria. Job done.

If we need to to go budget, 10M to grab Ronaldo Vieira would be a great shout. Young, homegrown.

Then big bucks still at striker/CB
What Dele money?

Even we get Messi , Ronaldo, Pirlo, Maradona, name any godly players, our fans will still find fault with them.

He also said, when asked about his pre-assist, something to the effect of, ‘the game is about more than one moment’.

I’m not convinced that Mourinho will have been as impressed by that 45 as everyone on here was tbh.

I think he will be, I just don't think he will say it, Jose is a *poke him with a stick manager*. Shy away and your fucked... Dele, embrace it and improve you will play, GLC.

Jose kinda reminds me of Bricktop in Snatch, "Shits himself when you put him in the ring. Poke him with a stick, you watch his bollocks grow."

Moving in the right direction. We were utter dog sh*t in the first half, and like many, he didn’t do enough.

But there’s no doubt he has the quality. I’d like him in a 3 with Gio (who is awesome) and PEH (jury is out but almost certainly our best defensive-ish midfielder).

I’m not 100% sure we’ll see it much though. My gut tells me (though I’m regularly wrong!) that Jose sees GLC and TN competing for one role, which would be a shame

He was decent. Some good turns and forward balls but also at least one notable misplaced pass. Defensively he was jogging around again. But as a 10 maybe he can get away with some of that. He certainly needs to get fitter.

It’s a shame that he came off for GLC, though that may have been planned or a reaction to the Yellow. I don’t think Winks added too much second half. And I’d like to think the result would have been similar with a GLC for Winks change.

But was he at fault for the first Southampton goal, if you watch it back he did not really press KWP and therefore allowed him time to pick the pass.

Might reflect Jose’s point about not all about his involvement in the goal.

Tanguy is amazing creativity but needs to press more, Gio would have been in KWP’s face
I honestly can't believe I've just read this. Ndombele was a good 10 yards away from KWP when he received the ball. KWP takes one touch and then launches the long pass all within literally one second.

And somehow there are people now expecting him to close down that distance at a speed that would put him into Olympic sprinter levels just so they have something to criticise him for.

Good grief.

I read this as just tempering the praise so that, after over a year of not applying himself, Ndombele doesn’t suddenly think 2 weeks of training well and a good 45 minutes means he’s arrived. If Mourinho wanted to criticise he’d criticise, not just leave it open to inference.

I think the sub was always planned, it was potentially accelerated by the (harsh) yellow and that Mourinho will recognise that there’s at the very least progress been made by Ndombele, even if there’s a way to go.

I melted having seen him in the Amazon documentary. You could see he was really upset and not enjoying life. It's easy to think "they earn shitloads, get over it", but he's a young lad who left his family behind, moved to a foreign country and at the same time had to adapt to the pace and tenacity of the PL.

The above perfectly explains what we saw from him last year. From the brief clip of him, he seems to be the ultimate case of needs a hug and a pat on the back to feel loved. The sort of player Harry Redknapp would get going, despite how old fashioned this sounds.

I think perhaps Jose is the opposite to that, although recent remarks and rumours suggest that they are willing to give him that time to condition himself and go again.

He did well coming on in the Europa League (from what I saw - fuck you Premier Sports and Bein) and he was visibly better against Southampton. The skill for the goal was remarkable. He still looked a little lacklustre off the ball, but one hopes that once his match fitness improves, that will allow him to put in the hard yards.

Personally, I'd love to see a 4-3-3 with Hojbjerg holding, GLC and Ndombele as CMs and Bale, Son & Kane up front. Add flying marauding full backs into the equation and, on paper at least, that's a fucking awesome team.

the good news is it looks like Tanguy and the whole squad will get an extra couple of days to improve their fitness even further before the next game now as Orient have Covid in their squad and will have to postpone (obviously that's not a good thing but the easing of the fixture congestion is good for us)

If the game is called off, I don't think it'll be postponed, it'll be a forfeit. No room for extra fixtures this season.

Remember that Mourinho is a student of Bobby Robson. I'm sure he learned a thing or two about the value of "putting your arm around a player"

It's going to take time to get better off the ball, you don't go from being out of the starting 11 from nearly a year to featuring in games Thursday and Sunday and being a pressing machine ffs:LOL:.

It's a process and it's a process which involves steps and trust me it won't be linear, he will have bad games and I'm sure some of you will be very excited to jump in here the second he does but it's a process of improvement. On Thursday he came on and played some decent passes and got his goal. On Sunday we saw exactly why we bought him because he can change a game and yet again indication his fitness has improved.

The goal moving forward will be to get him to a point where he defensively knows his responsibilities and has the fitness to carry that out whilst also consistently having an effect on games like he did in that 1 action Sunday.

He’s made a difference in both games as you’ve said. Totally agreed about the process for the off the ball side of things and I actually thought there were some positive off the ball signs too. The pass and then burst for his goal against Plovdiv. And while he wasn’t exactly bustling around against Southampton he was getting himself in better positions and right side of the man most of the time and was moving to spaces to try and get more involved when attacking.

I don’t mind the misplaced passes at all, that’s going to happen when you try to be more positive and expansive with the passing.

Being brave and willing to take a risk is exactly what we need, so long as the defensive effort is there for when it goes wrong. I thought his performance defensively was decent too considering he seemed to be playing more as a 10 rather than in a midfield 3. Obviously Jose is expecting more and it looks like it will come but the expectations of some thinking it'll turn overnight are wide of the mark.
