Stupid spurs offering guarantees that we can actually register him next season and that we won't ask him to take a significant pay deferral in the next few years

Barcelona president Joan Laporta says “there are certain things the club can’t offer” after Lucas Bergvall chose to join Tottenham Hotspur instead of the Spanish side.

The 18-year-old midfielder has emerged as one of Europe’s most coveted prospects and it appeared he would be signing for Barcelona, but The Athletic reported yesterday he had instead opted to join Spurs.

Laporta said Barcelona had sent a formal proposal to Bergvall but claimed Tottenham’s offer was more lucrative.

“Everyone says he is a great player and Deco has been monitoring him for months,” Laporta said. “We have sent a formal proposal for him and are waiting for an answer. The English clubs have a lot of resources and sometimes it’s difficult for us to compete with them.

“We know Tottenham want him too and they offered way more money than we do. We have a lot of extremely talented 17-year-olds and there are certain things that we, as a club, can’t offer.”

Tottenham have an agreement in place with Bergvall’s club, Djurgarden, worth a fixed fee of approaching €10million (£8.5m, $10.9m) plus add-ons.

Bergvall is expected to fly to London today (Friday), which is his 18th birthday, to undergo a medical and sign a five-year contract.

A deal was almost done with Barcelona, only for Spurs to persuade Bergvall that his career should continue there.

Tottenham maintained a pursuit led by their Danish technical director Johan Lange and managed to convince Bergvall to opt for them, with a final decision made on Thursday night.

as if we offered more money than them. Their wage bill is the highest in the world.

Fascinating that they're spinning this as a money issue and trying to save face by besmirching an 18yr old who simply chose what he thought was best for his development.

Once again the Spanish giants make a subtle dig at the money in the Premier League, all while throwing hundreds of millions at players. Nothing to do with the piss poor running of the club.

The second paragraph should justify Bergvall's decision if he has any doubts, he was joining to be added to the talent pool. He'll be a priority here.

They can't guarantee that he'd be registered to play for them, and they can't guarantee that he'd be paid to play for them. Minor issues.

What people will realise in the coming months is that Barcelona are in such a financial hole that they are going to have to have a massive clear out. It will be of epic proportions.

The Barca Studios SPAC has basically collapsed which puts them a further €100m in a hole. Their salary cap for next year is going to be under €200m and they are currently at over €400m.

They have no more economic levers to pull and they will have to get rid of all of their high earning stars. Which, in many cases won't be as easy as some might think due to their salary levels and nobody in Europe has any cash.

I hope we got him a cake.
As he steps out the blacked out Audi at the training ground, he’s greeted by Ange behind the BBQ cooking up a storm ‘G’day, mate, got a fist full of foot longs on coals for ya’, he glances to his right to see Levy with his party hat on, cheese sticks in one hand, YTS contract for £200 per week in the other. He strolls past Levy slightly confused and enters the foyer of the training centre greeted by Cullen and the gang singing ‘Happy Bergvall to you, Happy Bergvall to you..’!
