2 players with different roles, Hojbjerg comes on to help shut up shop. Lo Celso comes on to try get a goal. We have more offensive options than attacking ones so we see Hojbjerg more where Kulusevski at times will come on instead of Lo Celso. Ange doesn't fancy Skipp defending either so I think he just sees Bissouma and Hojbjerg for the defensive midfield role.

If that was the case then it doesn't make much sense how he kept playing kane every game in pre season
I wonder if there's some reluctance to use him more because Ange knows he's off in the Summer? It's the same with PEH. When he's come in he's done well enough to warrant more minutes imo.

Ange keeps driving it at press conferences that it's not about now, it's about progressing and learning the system and philosophy. The question may well be, is it more important for those still here next season to be more in tune with what we want to become than those who are not going to be here.

I assume we have offered him a new deal and he is reluctant to sign it
I doubt we have or will offer him a new deal. If we are looking at Morgan Gibbs-White I think it’s a pretty good bet Gio will be sold for whatever we can get, which won’t be much given his contract and lack of playing time this season, and the money put towards MGW, Guðmundsson or whoever else we have our eye on for that role.

As Trix has suggested I suspect he is looking to let Gio go in the summer (rightly imo) and would rather give players that will be in the squad next season and beyond more experience playing in his system.
I’d rather he played the guy most likely to win us the game yesterday, and that was 100% Gio not Kulu

You are probably right because it’s incredibly frustrating. It’s a shame as he’s starting to look like a very good player and one who can add a lot but I do appreciate his contract is running out and he may not want to extend it. It’ll annoy me if he ends up at villa

It wouldn’t bother me if he went to Villa . He can’t go 3-4 games without getting an injury . He ain’t joining any premier league club and playing 30 games in a season .

time to cut our losses. Much better suited to playing in Spain

Could be but Ange is happy to play a Werner who has a potentially shorter shelf life. It looks like Ange just has a preference for Kulu even if he isn’t in any sort of form or able to tactically adapt.

But that could be because of what Deki has done since being at the club including under Ange. He has generally been very good in my opinion. I think he's a wonderful player but you can't argue he has been poor recently. And now that we have injuries back and an, on paper, strong squad you have to offer opportunity to that squad.
Having said that I agree with you and think Gio can have big part to play.

I get that our position is he'll probably be off.

I understand ultilising the players that will be here next season.

But he',s on the bench, a rare 20 minute cameo here and there, to improve our chances of winning, is hardly going to hinder the overall direction we're heading in.

Yeah I agree. I understand that in certain situations you do make a decision based off the fact that you want us to better adapt to the longer term goal of where we need to be. Like with our style of play. Even though I personally do think it may need small tweaks to tighten up a bit, I get the persistence with playing the way we do, even if not everyone is the most ideal player for their individual role.

For other instances like away to West Ham with 20 minutes to go, when you're looking at someone who may or may not be here next season in Lo Celso, and he's the better suited player for the role as well as someone who performed quite well just days before, I'd like to see him utilised if the chance for a vital three points becomes higher in doing so. If the thought and opinion is that Kulusevski is simply the better option, even if I disagree I find that more understandable.

This.

If he knows both GLC and Hoijberg (who has done well off the bench this season) are not going to be here next season. Then why give them more game time?

Ange has made it clear he wants players who are committed to the club.

Regardless of how good he is, getting Maddison, Sarr, Bissouma, Kulusevski etc more time to develop is paramount over players who are not committed.

Both GLC and Hoijberg have not signed extensions, Hoijberg clearly wants to leave and unless GLC signs a new contract then I doubt he will get more minutes.

It has to be this, Ange knows football and he knows how valuable Gio can be but Ange is thinking longer term about what he’s building and if he knows Gio is likely to leave this summer then better to give minutes to others who are in long term plans.

Shame as I love Gio, just hope Kulu steps up in that back up role for Maddison next season then if that is the plan.

I love gio as a player, but it makes sense as to why he's not being used if he's not gonna be here next season.

It's a tough system to learn, and there's no point wasting the minutes on players Ange thinks aren't gonna be here next season.

Gutting though, as always liked him as a player, tenacious and good on the ball. Pity injuries plagued his time with us.

I actually think this has been one of his best seasons for us since he joined. It’s crazy to think he’s been here nearly five years now because it feels like his career here has never properly got started.

He oozes quality but I think he’s played under six different coaches now (including Mason) and he’s never really managed to establish himself as an integral player for the club. Possibly that’s because of all the upheaval but other players like Romero and Kulusevski established themselves in spite of the mess.

I can see why he might want a change and also why Ange may have doubts about him if he’s thinking about leaving.

Going to be interesting to see what happens when we play Arsenal, Chelsea and Pool in a week. They will be three high intensity matches. I don’t really care how poor Chelsea are it will still be a high octane affair given the rivalry. Personally I struggle to see Gio not being involved if fit. Ether way Ange will have to rotate and keep the team fresh. I know it’s not the first time we have played three in a week but the level of opposition this time will require our full effort.
