2014/15 - The Race For...?

So here we are, after a season during which nashing of teeth reached untold levels amongst the great and the good of SC, we find ourselves experiencing a period of relative tranquillity at WHL. No major murmurs of unrest, some relatively low-key signings on the cards, and a new manager in place sufficiently early for a decent pre-season to be mapped out. Even on here, there seems to be relative contentment with where we are at present, and even those who perhaps were not enamoured with the Pochettino appointment are tentatively open-minded with the prospect of the Argentinian's tenure. So where does this leave our ambitions for this season...? Given our 'competitor's' strengthening, we're arguably as far from Chelsea, City and Arsenal as we have been in years, while Liverpool will probably remain ahead of us again this season (albeit not quite as brutally as last season now that Suarez has gone). And then there's the LVG effect at United. Beyond this we have an impressive Everton side who are seemingly very much in driving seat for Lukaku's signature. It's feasible that we could play well, start gelling as a team/squad and show signs of real progress and still only manage 6/7th...with the former, this position isn't so much of an issue; what concerns me is what this will mean for our 'star' names and their futures at the Lane (i'm thinking Lloris, Jan, Eriksson, Lamela, Sandro etc.).

For at least the last 5 years, we've set our goals on a race for 4th/CL football; this year feels palpably different. What is the realistic race for this season?

6th, some exciting football and a trophy would be a successful season for me.

However, I want us to go all out for the EL as I:

1) think we have a decent chance of winning it
2) believe that it's the only way we'll get CL football.

If we win the EL, and play some good football, I'll be delighted tbh.

if we set our target and expectations as fans at 6th in the league we can only be pleased if we place higher.

I know I know. to dare is to do. and all that. But to be realistic is to be suprised. (my new spurs motto)

looking forward to the new season. could be a great prem league this year.

Reach warszaw for the europa league final.
That would be a dream.

Then a trip to wembley would be nice.

In the league lets see. We are 6th best team on the papers.

Important to see if we can improve over the season and step in the right direction.

As we know, football is not played on the papers. However I think 6th is a good start with our new manager and I would really, really like to win a trophy. 6th and a trophy would be a good season, anything higher would be very good.

Finish anywhere between 4th-7th....hoping for fourth obviously but not expecting.

Just because you don't expect it doesn't mean you don't aim for it though.

I think we have to aim for 4th.

Like the top 4 last year who all aimed for the title and 3 out of 4 failed, we have also to aim for the best we can realistically hope for, even if the odds are heavily against us and we have to rely on someone else slipping up.

6th, especially with a couple of convincing cup runs, would be no disgrace, but it's an inadequate target.

For me it's the race to becoming an entertaining team again. To be the sort of team I want to support.

I know all the arguments of why we need CL and how it's vital to our development but seeing the enjoyment of each season come down to whether we finish 4th or not has really killed a lot of the enjoyment for me.

If play well as a team and get to see the likes of Eriksen and Lamela showcasing their ability I'll be happy. If I can really look forward to our next game, I'll be happy. If we can compete in the cups for the pure enjoyment of seeing us try to win something without getting bogged down by how much the financial rewards are I'll be ecstatic.

I'll always be happy in the end with a European spot. Couldn't bear going the whole week watching CL and Europa with no Spurs in it. Absolutely love the European games, even EL groupstage!

Aim for the title, delighted with 4th, must get 6th.

Or I'll take a Europa League win and 17th place in the league!

Fourth isn't an achievement, I hate this (very bloody English) aspiration for mediocrity.

This season should be a race for the Europa League, the objective should be to win the damned thing and then mercilessly take the piss out of whichever English team missed out on Champions League qualification

None of them because beginning this season, EL winner gets a CL spot

For the umpteenth time, no team will miss out on CL qualification unless the CL winners are also an English team and also finish outside the Top 4

Europa League final and fourth should be our goal. Sixth or above and a good run in the EL will be a decent (but not great) season IMO.

why is there seemingly no expectation or belief that we can get fourth? I mean taking everything into account from last season, we were only 7 points off fourth, which was basically the two losses to Arsenal!

Now if Poch can get every player to improve even 2% and we actually have some fucking shape & tactics I honestly see no reason why cannot challenge for fourth spot! I think we have every good as chance as Liverpool do as they have sold Suarez and will be nowhere near as strong as they have not adressed their defensive problems!

It will be close between us, Liverpool & Man U for fourth IMO.
