Antonio said: “I am extremely happy to return to coaching, and to do so at a Premier League club that has the ambition to be a protagonist again.

“Tottenham Hotspur has state-of-the-art facilities and one of the best stadiums in the world.

“I can't wait to start working to convey to the team and the fans the passion, mentality and determination that have always distinguished me, as a player and as a coach.

“Last summer our union did not happen because the end of my relationship with Inter was still too recent and emotionally too involved with the end of the season, so I felt that it wasn’t yet the right time to return to coaching.

“But the contagious enthusiasm and determination of Daniel Levy in wanting to entrust me with this task had already hit the mark. Now that the opportunity has returned, I have chosen to take it with great conviction.”

Commenting on the appointment, Managing Director - Football, Fabio Paratici, said: “We are delighted to welcome Antonio to the Club. His track record speaks for itself, with vast experience and trophies in both Italy and England.

“I know first-hand the qualities Antonio can bring to us, having worked with him at Juventus, and look forward to seeing his work with our talented group of players.”

As I wrote just now on the other thread, I suspect that wording this part took quite a bit of work and that it may be the truth, but it's nothing like the whole truth:

Very odd to even reference that we had discussions in the summer. What's your take on it? Levy's way of trying to tell the fans that he wanted Conte all along? Severe case of arse-covering!!

All of the above and probably some of what Conte said about it being too soon, too. The best way to tell lies is to tell the truth and leave stuff out.

I think Levy did want Conte all along. If there is truth in the "too soon after Inter" line, then Nuno's appointment may always have been a matter of "see how he does and if he does well, we keep him; if not, we speak to Conte again".

No one has mentioned it, but this is the second time in two years that we have sacked a manager and appointed a high-profile replacement the very next day. That doesn't sound like a Spurs-of-the-moment decision to me. It sounds like a quietly concocted plan.

I think it's more about the comments Conte said on that occasion, about him dismissing the Spurs job because it didn't suit him or something like that.

Well that was obvious bullshit at the time, just a case of Conte telling journalists to fuck off.

There's an Occam's Razor argument here. If the club formalises an appointment with one of the world's most in-demand managers the next working day after they sacked his predecessor, they've been making plans. They didn't just decide to replace Nuno the after the final whistle on Saturday, have a chat with Conte on Sunday, agree terms on Monday and sign a contract on Tuesday.

It's not too far a leap from there to Conte telling them last summer, "I'm not quite convinced and I need some time off anyway, so no thanks".

But ring me again if your man doesn't work out!
