For the older ones amongst us, how good was he? And who would be a comparable player currently playing now?

Ossie was a genius, quick, tricky, and had a great football brain. Who would I compare him to? Well, Modric comes close, back in the day but in the current squad there isn't anyone. On other teams, I can't think of anyone, either. Ossie really was unique, such a skillful, graceful player, and a tricky little fecker, too. Loved to watch him play alongside Villa and Hoddle. Those were the days, Burkinshaw really set the standard when he signed Ossie and Ricky, a genuine coup back in '78 (y)

This 110% he was an absolute genius...I always class hoddle as my all time favourite but having ardiles along side him I think made him..for me ardiles goes down as an all time great up there with the finest, and we’ve had a few..

If you want a real com parison, Modric.
Exactly my thoughts when I read the op.
The thing is, he was a catalyst for signing international stars. The double signing of him and Villa was huge for the game.

Spurs had a Stadium jacket that looked exactly like that Germany kit in the film that looked absolutely top notch. Coincided with one of our succesful seasons under Poch. I bet opposition teams were quite intimidated at the idea of us stomping them off the pitch like the Nazi Germany team ;)

I've been looking for a non-branded version of it for a while.

incisive passer, light on his feet, would take opposition players out of the game with quick thinking and execution

not the best defensively but could nick it

Ossie and Glenn in CM, who needed a DM then

actually he didn’t have one as a coach either as I recall, kamikaze tactics

I always fear when I see a thread about an old player that they have died!

He was player of the tournament of 1978 World Cup, and made Kempes the star he was. When we signed him, it would of been equivalent at the time to us signing a massive major star of passing World Cups. Then to throw in Ricky Villa, who most of us thought was a thug, ended up being a sublime player himself, though inconsistent.

To even compare him to Scott Parker from a point of tenacity, I can see why that comparison. Modric I understand, but then again Modric I can’t recall lighting up a WC the way Ardiles did. Plus he was coming as a WC winner. The ticker tape home debut against Villa at home was something else. And I was at Nottingham Forest for their debut, where we drew 1-1. The arrival of him and Ricky changed English football, and Hoddle excelled when Ossie arrived. I call him a cheeky, nippy, skilful, sublime, gracious, tenacious brilliance.
