Wait til the animal rights activists get started. No more Bears, Falcons, Dolphins, Bengals, Cheetahs, Hedgehogs, Wombats.........

I may have made a couple of those up.

Isn't the cockerel crest connected to cockfighting? You don't have to be animal rights activist to object to the celebration of cocks being fitted with metal spurs and thrown into a pit to fight it out to the death.

However before the "it's PC gone mad" pile in, I'm not suggesting we change our name or drop the cockerel from our club crest. Not least because doing so could end up sending out a totally false message- as if treating nonhuman animals in cruel, barbaric ways is something we used to do, and not something we continue to actively participate in.

The funniest thing is the snowflakes in America shrieking about the sacrilege of changing a team's name, when teams get moved to another city whenever it's more profitable to do so, screwing history for a nickel and dime.

Not sure i agree with the OP reasoning but when was the last time anyone saw us refered to as "Hotspur" on the telly? It simply doesn't happen. We're not the only ones who have their second name dropped either.

As other's have mentioned, I'd more concerned if PETA turned it's sights on us. If they felt our name was derived in anyway from cock-fighting then they'd probably be daubing red paint on the stadium while planning the best way to ruin the lives of everyone who works for the club.

Thankfully, a cockerel's spurs are natural, there's no metal spur on the one on our crest, so fingers crossed they're too busy... I dunno, screaming at people for euthanising animals, stealing homeless people's pets, murdering working animals "to free them", or just slaughtering thousands of dogs a year that they can't be arsed to rehome.

Probably not the thread for me to be pouring out my disgust for PETA... what am I talking about? EVERYWHERE is the right place to be flinging my poop at PETA. Fuck PETA.

I wasn’t sure where to write this but with this depressing and crazy world we live in at the moment are we in any danger of losing our name? I’m certainly no historian but with all this utter rubbish in the news and sports teams in America being forced to change their name and thus erasing history it makes me start to wonder. Did Harry Hotspur do or say something remotely offensive when he was alive? I know it sounds ridiculous and my apologies if this offends someone but I’m getting sick of all this rubbish. I’m all for positive change but please....
Really wtf? I can’t even. What do you think is perceived as being wrong with our name or our history? It’s either a poor attempt at humour or you get triggered by anything vaguely PC!

Nah mate, nothing wrong with our history. Just pissed at the world at the moment and thought what’s next?! No offence meant just felt like venting.

Fwiw, try not to be pissed off at the world - what it's going through is a correction.

If anything, be pissed it's taken this long and this many people to get to where we are, but know that today we're closer than yesterday and tomorrow will be closer still. As long as people keep moving forward, we're getting there. (y)

And you thought ah let's go take that negativity to a place where people are looking for sweet sweet escapism through the world of sport. Cheers pal.

I am sure someone will come up with some spurious reason why Hotspur should no longer be allowed if they dig long enough.
Unfortunately that is the world we currently live in. it has gone mad.

Similar to a review happening as to whether Swing Low should be banned from English Rugby matches for example.

Apparently Harry Hotspur did have a gnome in his back garden, not sure what colour it was though
