Dear [insert name from spreadsheet here],

Sorry for sending you a letter at random but you are on our mailing list and all contact fully complies with the recent GDPR. We have noticed through social media and forum's such as the brilliant Spurs Community, that you are having a bit of a hard time recently dealing with what was once a simple matter. Buying a ticket to a Spurs game and knowing when and where it was going to be played and how to receive your ticket.

You have been a fan of the club for many years and always supported us so I'm sure you're wondering why things have got so complicated. The simple truth is, it's all a bit of a fuck up (we don't normally announce this). Now whether you have bought a ticket for the new stadium (or Wembley), and have received your ticket for the weekend's fixture (or not), or you have booked flight's for the Liverpool game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (NOT White Hart Lane), or Cardiff (and probably Man City, maybe), or in fact you have decided to receive credit on your account (or refund), you can be assured that the club is here to help you.

Details of our new credit card can be found on our new website (or not if you are still trying to navigate your way around it).

Alternatively you may have noticed the Champions League badges on the shirt sleeves on the new kit. These are available separately from the new Club Shop (if it ever opens). And tickets for these games at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (NOT White Hart Lane but possibly Wembley) will also be available shortly. Probably. We're still backed up on sending out the Fulham tickets.

Keep supporting Spurs [insert name from spreadsheet here]. We'll keep coming up with inventive ways of wringing every last penny out of you.

We've become a world where appearing to be good is more important than actually being good. And appearing to be good is a lot easier.

Maybe but seems to me the fan who received this letter posted it on social media himself, not at the club's bequest.

So how do yo think this came about? The CEO sits around trawling through twitter looking for sad fans to write letters to? The social media person burst through the door of the CEO saying 'we need to write a letter to this fan who's in a rough patch!'?

The media guy saw something, thought 'we can get clicks out of this', drafted a letter, the CEO shrugged and signed it and they all crossed their fingers that the guy posts it (why wouldn't he, he's a fan and he got a nice letter) and then people on social media share it with meaningless captions like 'this is class' and 'what football is all about' which makes them feel all warm and fuzzy without doing anything. Everyone undeservedly slaps themselves on the back and we all move on to the next thing.

Or he was just looking to see what the clubs fans were saying and thought this guy seems sad maybe i can cheer him up. You know it is not london Barnsley is a fairly small town where people still give a shit about each other.

Do they keep a list of all of the fans for him to check or does he just run a search for 'Barnsley' through twitter and check back through everyone's profile?

I'm sure he has a list of season ticket holders/members and their details.

If it makes the guy happier does it really matter what the clubs motivation for doing it is?

Yeah. Considering someone here was over the moon just to get a biethday card from the club makes this letter seem pretty decent.

The CEO is 29 yrs old. Of course he follows what the fans have to say about his club on social media. (I know I would) Brilliant PR stunt imo writing the letter

I seem to recall seeing an article where the fan said he had been bantering with the Barnsley social media team and from that they noticed he was having some problems. Well played Barnsley
