Could have been possible if we didn't sign paulinho. 17 million plus the 10 million we were going to spend on villa.
If we didn't blow 17 million on a midfielder we didn't really need we might be able to afford him. Gary hooper anyone?
Paulinho is a good player, but wasn't a priority. That 17 million could have been topped up to fund the Leandro, saldado or benteke signings. Does anyone believe we'll spend more than 20 million on a striker now?
Can anyone else see us spending more than 17 million on a top striker? Was paulinho a priority with dembele and sandro coming back?
Doubt it mate. I'll eat my hat if we spend more than 17 million on a striker.

Honestly, we get it, you don't agree with the Paulinho signing

The dance begins I suppose, gonna wait out Villa's valuation of him and see if he forces the move with a bunch of antics.

I'm not being wilfully malevolent here, but I wonder if someone like Dempsey might interest Villa ?

Player + cash deals rarely work but I can genuinely see that one working out well for all parties involved.

Only problem is Levy is likely to offer Dempsey + £2 million. :p

Is it groundhog day?

Do you know how much we have to spend? Do you know that Jovetic would come to us? Or is even a target that fits what the club wants? Do you know if Sandro will recover by early season, or won't get a relapse? Will Dembele's hip hold up?

You talk as if you want us to go to the next level, having a great big hole in midfield because of injury is not going to the next level, having a good quality roster of midfielder's will take us there..

judge the board etc after the window and we can count up what has been spent then, just don't groundhog day the Paulinho thing to death.. (y)

What do get when you combine Emile Heksey and Peter Crouch? A pretty good striker it turns out.

Whilst I do respect everybody's opinion I still have to ask some people who the fuck is good enough for us? Who is better than Benteke? (that would give us a second look that is)

last summer before we entered the mix Villa had a bid accepted by Fulham but he rejected them I believe, holding out for Liverpool

Agreed Clint, it's a big jump going from Villa an absolute goal scoring legend to Benteke who's had one good season in England. I'd rather activate Jovetic release clause at 27 mil lol but that aint happenin.

Speaking strickly in a goalscoring sense, Jovetic has never had as good a season as Benteke did last season, and has only really had 2 decent seasons where he scored 13 and 14 goals respectively. I know he has other qualities that make up for it, but I think we really want a great goalscorer up front more than anything else. Benteke may then be a better fit for us.

I'd also be pretty surprised if there are many examples of 22 year old strikers who scored something like 19 goals and 4 assists for a team that fought against relegation, and then didn't go on to repeat it at better clubs. Believe it or not it's quite rare for a young player (or any player) to score 19 goals in the premier league in their debut season.

It's an interesting situation. I doubt Villa want a player on their books who wants to leave (unless their chairman does a Levy), but if they sell then they will want the deal to be done ASAP so they can pursue their own targets. This means that Levy has no choice but to go against form and pay up early. Will he try to use Benteke's transfer request to ease a couple million off his price tag, or will he finally bite the bullet and pay big for a striker?

I don't think they can afford to eat the wages/amount of money they would get for him like they did with Bent. I think he will go for around 20-22m, they won't get their asking price. I also think that while he seemingly good friends with the guys at Chelsea (),
he would recognize that we would be a preferable move for playing time. He would still be near the younger Belgian talents, but he would be more likely to get in good for the World Cup.

Not so sure about this fella, has that "Bent"-vibe.
Benteke had a great spring, therefor he is what everyone remembers, the autumn belonged to Michu, everybody wanted him then and eventually he just cooled off, so did everobody's interest. Feels like nobody's talking about Michu anymore..
If the price tag lies around 20 mill then it's too much of a risk I would say, half of that and it's worth the risk.

My cup of tea
