Have to say if it turns out this was in fact a device it's a bit worrying. Thank fook someone noticed it. The damage say an IED full of ball bearings could do in a confined area like a stadium doesn't bear thinking about. I'm kind of surprised it's not happened before to be honest. Hopefully the CCTV might have caught the face of who ever placed it there.

"Incredibly lifelike" they are saying now; that covers anything from someone building a fake bomb for grins, to them popping their phone in a sandwich box and leaving it behind a pipe. But fortunately, it doesn't suggest serious terror.

Hope it does turn out to be nothing. "Full assessment now concluded and found device wasn’t viable" could mean it wasn't a bomb or it was a badly made bomb that couldn't have gone off.

If caught you can guarantee someone will do time for this and given the camera's around football stadia I'll be amazed if someone isn't picked up quickly.

A suspicious item discovered at Old Trafford on Sunday was a training device, police have confirmed.

The Premier League match between Manchester United and Bournemouth was called off after a suspect package was found shortly before kick-off and a controlled explosion carried out.

Police said the item had "accidentally been left by a private company following a training exercise".

The match has been rearranged for Tuesday at 20:00 BST.

A Greater Manchester Police (GMP) statement read: "Shortly before today's planned football fixture, staff from the Manchester United ground alerted police to a suspicious item that had been found in the toilets within the North West Quadrant, between the Sir Alex Ferguson stand and the Stretford End.

"Police quickly attended and explosive experts were called in to assess the item, which has been described as an incredibly realistic-looking explosive device."

The Sir Alex Ferguson Stand and the Stretford End were evacuated and sniffer dogs brought in.

Kick-off was delayed initially and shortly afterwards the match was abandoned on police advice.

A bomb disposal team carried out the explosion at about 16:30 BST.

Assistant chief constable John O'Hare said: "I am grateful to the Manchester United and Bournemouth supporters for their support and assistance today.

"Following today's controlled explosion, we have since found out that the item was a training device which had accidentally been left by a private company following a training exercise involving explosive search dogs.

"While this item did not turn out to be a viable explosive, on appearance this device was as real as could be, and the decision to evacuate the stadium was the right thing to do, until we could be sure that people were not at risk"

They should get a points deduction because of this as they've had an unfair advantage, knowing they need a draw for fifth but don't need to go all out for a win as they can't get fourth now. Plus they've already caused two games to be delayed because of poor time keeping. It's their duty to employ competent people which they clearly haven't.

Weren't there a load of anti terrorism exercises in England last week? Was this something to do with that rather than something specific to Man Utd?

You'd think that they would count those devices back in.

"OK, one is missing. Sure never mind. What harm can it do"

The company forgetting the device is bad but the person that was supposed to check the area where the toilet was clearly wasn't thorough and deserves to lose their job.

Do you mean the person from the security company, or the United employee doing pre-match checks?

Did any of the news outlets mention who found the device?
