I don’t want him. He is waaaay too expensive, not good enough to force a midfielder or winger out of the lineup. If we are going to spend that kind of money, then they either better be young with world class potential or world class. Ings already proved that he can’t make it at a top side, let him get his goals for a mid table club, but I just don’t see it for us. Maybe 3 years ago.

It’s pretty easy to imagine a 4-4-2 with Kane dropping deeper and threading balls through to Ings, Son, and Bale.

Always see people worried about how much we are paying for someone, and can never understand why ! If Levy sanctions a purchase then we obviously can afford it. That literally is all we need to care about. Could be a £1 or £100m, makes absolutely no difference to me how much we pay, all that matters is 'Is it the right player'. In an ideal world, no player at our club should be a 'bench warmer', they should all be busting a gut to be a first XI regular. Ings would do that, you can see that by how he's got his career back on track. At £45m would he be deemed as overpriced for Fantasy Football or Football Manager purposes - yeah probably. Back in the real world, he's worth whatever we are prepared to pay for him.

Oh I'm not saying I'm worried about it.

I'm saying in my view it's not going to happen because logic.

Literally had to double check the time stamp on this one ! Bloke was great today, the first goal was Kanesque, absolutely World Class. Sure he's expensive and it doesn't seem like we are going to pursue him further, but to think he wouldn't be a great addition is just bang wrong.

Would be my first choice option of our reported striker targets. We’re clearly trying to go for it this season, so a proven, lethal veteran that is still in their prime makes sense [Jimenez another great option].

Yes he’ll be costly but I do think he’s got several more great seasons in the tank. I don’t necessarily feel that we need to go for a young striker that we can have around for 5+ seasons, as I think that the club have faith in the development of Troy Parrott.

Was i pressed with him, although I. Ant see him coming here and spending majority of time on bench, don’t think him and Kane could play as a two

Been watching this thread with great interest. People actually questioning whether we should sign him? If there is any chance we must do all we can. He could play up front with Kane too.

I think the majority of us know how good a player he is.

Its just the price he'd come at as well as his age.

You'd be right to say its not our money but 50m is huge money for a goalscorer of his age and I guess lack of potential.

It would be very unlike Spurs.

Might be showing my age here but I remember squads having 4 strikers. There are plenty of games go for around so back up is a wrong way of talking about it.
Kane will be ruined if we don’t give him someone who can rotate with him throughout the season
It's not ever so long ago - we still had four strikers when Bale first signed, but transitioned away from it before he left for Madrid.

There's a very logical reason why squads no longer have four strikers though:

Squads had four strikers back when everyone played with two in a 4-4-2 so that's equivalent to team that plays with one CF having two in the squad. The "no.10" role was a smaller/quicker striker who played alongside the no.9, rather than being an AM.

Back then, squads also tended to have four wide midfielders (2x LM & 2x RM), whereas most squads have wingers instead now.

Wilson - 2 major injuries, we wouldn’t pay £20m
Milik - 2 major injuries, we wouldn’t pay £40m
Ings - 2 major injuries and people want us to pay £45-50m for him?

You would expect Ings to fit our system better than Weghorst and score more goals but when we play teams who park the bus and we’re known for struggling against these sides then you need a player in Weghorst’s mould. For me I would sign the latter and push hard for both Dias and a CM.

He is the main man at Saints, there is zero chance he'd come to us unless the plan was to start him.

He'd only regularly start if we are playing a 442 which means we have to lose a midfielder, it's not going to be the holding mid (PEH/Sissoko/Winks) so one of Son, Bale, Lo Celso, Ndombele or Bergwijn.

There is no way I think we should play 4-4-2 and I wouldn't want any of those listed to lose game time to fit him in.

The only way I would want him is if he is happy to play second fiddle and try to dethrone Kane as the lone CF (not going to happen). If he is happy to play less important games (cups, easier league games during fixture pile ups) then maybe but I just can't see it.

Additionally, if he was only playing say 1/4 or 5 matches who is to say he'd be anywhere near as prolific? He seems like someone who thrives on consistent game time and being a focal point.

40 million is far too much, for that reason lads

There’s no denying that he’s kicked on since joining Southampton, but I don’t think the move would benefit him other than maybe a pay rise.

He’s scoring goals for the club he loves, he could well be called up for the Euros if he continues. He wouldn’t oust Kane from our best 11, so he’ll be looking at playing cup matches or if Kane gets injured. He seems as if it benefits him to be playing constantly and he won’t get that with us.

So as much as I like him, I can’t see this happening. Although I do like the fact we seem to be looking for someone to put pressure on Kane rather than some sort of understudy.

I’d rather see more money at CB and CM, but I was so impressed with him today. His movement and touch was absolutely phenomenal. Was so impressed. He made a few of our midfielders and defenders look silly (I guess we’re actually bad opposition to scout against). If we are all of a sudden made of money, we could do a heck of a lot worse.

I seriously doubt it would happen. But Ings is a very good player and has been in all but his Liverpool days. Last season he stepped it up a gear and produced a season up there with the best strikers in world football, this season he looks sharp. Some fans seem to underrate him here, it baffles me.

So... if we if sign Ings, can we say we beat Southampton 7-0? :hilarious:

Seriously I don't see it happening too. But... Southampton has been good to us. if we can get close to their evaluation, we might have a chance.

The money, even a bit over the odds, isn't worth it to Southampton. It's not like they could spend 30-50 million on a replacement with the same 'guarantee' of goals they'll get from Ings. The possibility of relegation exists for them with him in the side and the odds get a hell of a lot worse without him.

If they have any sense, they'll only ever decide to sell him if he makes it clear he wants to go and during an end-of-season strategy to optimize the fee with targets lined up.

He's consistent at this level.

Ya can't argue with his record.

What's it worth is the question and are we willing...still, per ITK from only last week

Yeah I don’t care about what anyone says negatively, the guy just scores. He has that untrainable skill to be in the right position and sniff out a chance/goal. He’ll never be the most creative, or have the best analytical stats, or look the most impressive - but he just scores. That is invaluable.

We won’t sign him though, because Saints rightly view him at £50mil, which is what he’s worth in this market for sure.
