That's quite sad really, young guy who had his dreams come true only to find that the reality wasn't what he had hoped.

Met him in a service station once and came across as a very nice bloke, unfortunately one of many victims of over-hyping an English player too soon. He could have played at a decent level consistently for a mid-table Prem side but people labelled him the new David Beckham and he could never live up to that.

Another player victim of Levy's negotiations as well I feel which hindered potential moves, bit like Gomes has been treated really.

Watched two minutes, that was enough. What a wanker.

Bottle, fight and comfort level spring to mind. Big billy big bollocks made it, his style of player went out of fashion, and he gave up.

I think he comes across pretty well. Interesting how players and ex-players talk about the game once there's no longer a need to speak with the typical cliché-ridden, must-not-say-anything-interesting-or-contentious, footballer-as-personality-free-dullard, highly media trained 'technique'. Shame Bentley never really made it with Spurs, but it's clear that he's a player that didn't fit the modern game. Fair play to him if he's happier now.

He did come across well. His voice was shaky at the start as I think he was either upset or nervous. I do recall his rather large ego at times, but I don't ever recall him being a 'bad bloke'. Hope he does well.

Yeah seems nervous and unsure what to sat, but ultimately seems to have lost the fight or desire to improve or even maintain the level.

A standard premier league player in my opinion, nice enough guy though.

He comes from the same locality as a mate of mine. My mates quite a arrogant so and so but he's always said Bentley was a tosser. That was based on his younger days no doubt and people change I guess.

I liked him as a player and think Redknapp Fucked his career like he did a few others.

I suspect a lot of people will answer that their favourite time was back when they were an apprentice or junior and all they lived for was the next weekend and going out with mates.

This isn't really that sad a story. Just seems to me that Bentley is a bit of a Peter Pan character.

Seems like a nice enough chap though. I'm sure he wil do ok at whatever he does in the future. He has made enough money in football to re-invent himself as whatever he likes really!

I was really interested to hear what he had to say when watching last night - but he came across poorly in my opinion. Just sounded like he couldn't be bothered and wanted to live on easy street. Imagine having demands placed on you for 60,000k a week eh?!?!! Scandalous.

Kept going round in circles without delivering a real reason why he messed up his career - always said it was down to something else or someone else. Never his problem.

Is the above link all there is or was there more?

If that's all there is I think it's quite telling what he said, not just about him but about football.
"Players are scared in world cups, playing short safe balls instead of trying to do something with it"
"Fans don't care anymore, it should be a carnival atmosphere when England are in the finals"
"I don't feel like players play for fun"

You can tell him for x amount of thousands a week he should put up etc but imo all players should go out on the pitch intending to have some fun.
It's an entertainment business. No kid on the park is thinking "if I play it safe I won't make a mistake and get hounded by the media"
He wants to beat 5 players then nutmeg the keeper, run to the corner flag (tree) and pretend it's a microphone.

Because that fun factor has started to wane the game has gotten too serious and the entertainment level has gone.

Look at some of the most talented players throughout history and most were volatile characters.
Maradona, Best, Ronaldo(BRA) Gazza, Greaves etc. Many were batshit mental and went out on the pitch to do something outrageous, not meet a km quota to prove they worked hard.

Never had the pace or craft to make it big.. The big and over inflated transfer fee we paid, appeared to be a burden for him and we never got any value from him with the very rare exception.

I reckon he could still do a job for us down the right. Would be free and relatively cheap wages.

Is he even playing at the moment?
Nope. Released from his contract last year and appears to have no interest in carrying on.
In some ways that's a harder thing to do than carry on. Turning your back on an income that could easily set you and your kids up for life isn't easy.
