It makes me 'meh'. I only want to see us in the league table. As high up as possible.

You take one particular recent transaction out of our "sold" and we're the same as Liverpool.

Rather frustratingly, if that transaction hadn't happened we would have probably been up there with Liverpool too this year.

But hey, that £85 million keeps our net spend nice and low eh?

(Appreciate that is a massive over-simplification, but it is funny/devastating that the amounts tally up).

we should be proud to unearth such talent that is keeping us competitive. And yes its sad that they had to leave. But at least we saw some amazing players over the years.

Eh....but then you have to pull the £85m we spent on players out as well....so, it balances out i guess.

Don't know if it is good or bad, certainly doesn't feel like one or the other.

Suppose knowing that we are better run than Stoke is something....but they put on those magnificent displays of brazilian magic on the pitch so consistently....so even that becomes a wash.

Yes I know, I know. But if you simply had our squad today plus Bale we wouldn't be worrying about who would be replacing Tim Sherwood as our manager. That I'm almost certain of.

Like I said, massive over-simplification.

Without Daniel Levy we wouldn't be a top 6 club.

But yes, yes, I know, he's a "shine head", he's ruining our faaackin club, #LevyOut etc.

During the 90s we had a high net spend but low wage budget.

Since Levy we've had a low net spend but the wage budget has increased consistently and part of the reason we've been able to buy players with the reputation of Lloris, Vertonghen, Lamela, Paulinho and Eriksen.

So I'm happy that we have gone down this route. Now we are on a position to buy higher quality players we need to be much smarter about how we identify our targets.

Well that chart tells me that is you want to be in the top eight you either need to be amongst the top five (net) spenders or be one of the lowest four (net) spenders

Makes me neither happy nor sad, although I don't think this list should be viewed in isolation.

What it doesn't say it that nearly half of the monies received involve the sale of 3 players or that nearly a third of it involves one player. What it does illustrate is that whilst we may be third when it comes to spending almost all of the monies received have been reinvested in playing staff.

It's easy to get emotional and see Spurs as skinflint tightwads but you need to view this in the full context of what has been going on at the club over the past few years. How much has 'Hotspur Way' or the new stadium cost so far? Add those costs in and where does that put us?

Of those clubs that have regularly competed for Europa/Champions League places over this period where would we be in this table?

While we're at it why not factor in/out those clubs that would fail FPP when it comes to european qualification and then see where we stand.

It makes me reasonably happy. That's kind of where a financially self sustaining club, with a relatively small average annual profit margin, has to be.

It also means we are one of the three best performing clubs in terms of points per net spend over that 5 year period.
