I know England won the U17 and U20 World Cup but I understand that youngsters don’t always become the players at the senior level we hope.

Watching many of the matches over the last few weeks it seems that even teams who have spluttered through, often seem to have far more technical players and a deeper squad of ‘close to’ world class players. If not world class, let’s say, very good players you’d want at Spurs.

Why don’t England?

We have Kane. We have a semi decent squad but you don’t look at England squad in awe. Looking at our team, People wouldn’t think that there are many players that could really do damage or are just at that level where other squads would worry.

We know English players cost too much and people say we don’t develop them at a young age the way some other countries do.

Am I wrong these days? Do we have reasons to be optimistic?

Of course, now I’ve said that, we will probably go onto the later rounds of the WC!!!

If you think things need to change, what exactly?

With youngsters choosing to leave big clubs who block their paths as well as going abroad to build their name I can see us having a very healthy generation of players to choose from. Perhaps the pool of quality won't be as deep as Brazil or France but I do think we should be able to go to future tournaments with lots of optimism. As long as we have a coach who focuses on balance and not round pegs square holes, then I think we can have some enjoyable tournaments to look forward to.

England lack creativity massively in the middle of the park, a player who can set the pace of a game Andy be creative, Lalanna is the only one who i would consider as a true play maker and he is fucked. England have a group of strong fairly technical player, they have controlled a lot of possession in the WC but how many time have they carved team a open?

The Premiership doesn't lend itself to young English players coming through, clubs are more likely to give foreign players a chance than take a chance on a youngster which inevitably stunt their development as their is no pipeline for young talent to progress. That's why a load of youngsters are going to the Bundesliga and abroad to ply their trade, that way it gets them out of their comfort zone and it improves their mentality and focus which is what more of our young players need.

I think loftus cheek if moulded into the right player could be that player. He seems to have the ability there just needs pushed to the next level.

But as mentioned, winks will be back and could do a job there also.

I don't think there's much to worry about. We've got one of the youngest squads in the tournament, we've had two youth tournament wins in the last year and the coaching also seems to be improving.

I can't even remember the last player we had like this. Think Eriksen, De Bruyne, Silva, Ozil, Iniesta etc....who was the last really good playmaker England had that could play the eye of a needle pass to create a chance in a difficult space? I'd guess the closest we've had to something like that in living memory was Scholes and he was crap for England, often stuck out on the left wing in a 4-4-2. Before that you'd need to go back to Gascoigne or Beardsley.

If eight of the other nine outfield players (not Kane) can up their running by 20%, we can bring back Hoddle to do the passing.:)

My opinion, but I believe a lot like you over estimate Wink's capabilities. Wishful thinking doesnt and wont turn him into an Eriksen, or an Inniesta or an Isco or any players of that ilk. He is a very good Central midfielder but to suggest he will be the answer to an England play maker that will open up defenses, is stretching it a bit. The same applies to Loftus Cheek. Then again I could be wrong but I doubt it somehow

Will do fuck all unless they find a creative midfielder, Lallana or Winks maybe but that's what England's need.

This all day long. England are desperate for a midfielder with good close control, who can shift the ball, spot a pass, etc. Henderson, Lingard and Alli are not that player.

Also think that to put more pressure on Croatia in the second and get a better foothold in midfield, Southgate should have reverted to a back four, two in defensive midfield (to combat Modric and Rakitic), three AMs and Kane, i.e. 4-2-3-1.

Winks, U20-champs captain Lewis Cook at Bournemouth, maybe (hopefully) Onomah, more attacking players in Phil Foden, Jaden Sancho.

We have talent coming through in that area. Just hope they get top flight football and Southgate starts to include them sooner rather than later.

Once the premier league starts again I suspect England will be forgotten and so will giving chances to young English players. Man City have just bought Mahrez. Did they really need to or could they just not have given those minutes to Foden?

It’s the same with us and KWP and Aurier.

It’s worse down the league too with lower level teams buying average or over the hill players. Just look at Arsenal this summer for example, they’ve bought 5 players from abroad.

Premier league managers need to trust the English players.

I don't think Winks will ever be Modric but England do have reason to be optimistic, there are a whole bunch of kids coming through who are very good footballers. Tomori, Clarke-Salter, KWP, DaSilva, Maitland-Niles, Ejaria, Onomah (maybe), Lookman, Sessegnon, Sancho, Foden, Ojo, Mount, McEachran etc etc

If the next crop of youngsters coming through aren’t going to get the chance in the Premiership I hope they are brave enough to follow Sancho, Lookman’s example and go and play abroad.

I agree Winks won’t become Modric but that’s a huge ask of any player. Modric has been the best midfielder in the world for 4/5 years now!

Worth noting that at just a few months before his 23rd birthday, Modric signed for us, after being courted by Newcastle and having had Wenger completely dismiss him.
Not every elite player starts out as a bonafide world star from the off.

The most important thing is them kids you listed get proper senior games. Modric was older than Mbappe is now and playing football in the Bosnian league learning his craft!

The future of English football is looking bright and so it should. The money is there, a plan was out in place a few years ago and now it’s going to be down to the clubs and the players themselves. These lads need to force the issue, get out of being stockpiled for good wages and start playing senior football.

The Championship is a great place to learn their trade. Such a competitive league.
