The bit that got me ( although I remain sceptical whether it’s actually true) is the being miffed that they didn’t get bonuses for reaching the CL final.

We lost. Maybe if they really feel that then we should have played better and got our bonuses from actually winning? I can only imagine what the likes of Roy Keane would make of that.

Exactly. Looks at the disagrees I got when I stated something similar. Some of our fans are happy to see us be losers.

I hadn’t seen your post. I have now and agree with every word. Been saying it for ages, but the “punching above our weight” thing may have been accurate, but the repetition of it by fans, management and press have created a subconscious get out clause for the players and club imo.

Ironically, the basis for the "punching above our weight" thing is the fact that we have consistently had the 6th highest wage bill in the league for years and, across football as a whole, it's wage expenditure that is the key factor in success. But how can our whole squad be underpaid if they're the sixth highest earning squad in the highest salary paying league in the world?

It's a manufactured narrative that was based on the fact that clubs like West Ham and Palace were, for a while, paying their top earner more than we paid ours. Of course, the fact that all the rest of their players were on peanuts compared to all of ours was ignored.

It's a bit of a perfect storm in terms of timing and I'm sure we will drop if they did this analysis again for the current season. Our latest figures will be up to April 2019 (I believe) so lagging behind by about a year.

In their calculation they are multiplying assets by player spending by stadium capacity then dividing all that by a wage indicator. So if our figures go to April last year that means we have large assets and capacity (new stadium) but low player spending and wages (because it's before Ndombele etc.). That's my rather uninformed assessment of it.

What I think is illuminating is this:
Wage costs at Liverpool have doubled since 2015 as the club’s strategy appears to be to aim to break even on a day to day operating basis. The wage to income metric has operated in a relatively tight 56-58% band over recent years apart from the season that Jurgen Klopp was recruited.

If we can move toward this level of wage spending (55-60% of income) we should see improvements on the pitch. That article is quoting us as 39% currently although that will have bumped up since with the new players and Toby's new contract. But that definitely seems like an achievable target, and with our increased revenues now it should mean a considerable upturn in wage spending.

I think everything will be on hold until this virus has been beaten or we can control it. Don't know what will happen with new contracts or new players being signed. I assume things will continue with new contracts and judging by the players refusing a wage cut etc. ( last I heard may but that may have changed) they will expect increases.
It'll be a long while before things are back to anywhere "normal" and can see there being a new meaning to that word as well.

Spurs are too expensive to be acquired by the "bad guys" in middle east or Russia to be used as a plaything. We will likely to be bought by the "good guys" from the US who never do anything wrong which could be a hit or a miss.

Just did a little Maths and if you take wages away from revenue and even add our stadium payment on top we are actually 2nd best off to United. Chelsea are worst followed by Arsenal. But if you add Arsenal stadium payment in as well they are worst off.

But that's a debate for another thread.....

Actually quite a few did, especially in the media, I distinctly remember one diatribe about our lack of moral fibre which had me particularly riled up. I didn’t feel this at the time, as I was too upset about that final day, but throughout the season there were gifted goals late on in games which led to dropped points, including a few last minutes. One Paul Stalteri was the chief culprit.

I was immensely proud of finishing our highest ever finish in the premier league era, but equally very annoyed at both our misfortune on the final day and our ability to grasp defeat from the jaws of victory on multiple occasions.

You may think we were just victims of circumstance, but to me that’s just a blindness to our own complicity in our failings.
Maybe it came down to a lack of sufficient quality in the squad. I still also think that one thing that we do miss is a real leader in the middle of the park - someone who has been there in terms of winning top trophies and can provide a steadying hand for the younger, more inexperienced players.

Worth referring back to this in the summer when we don’t buy anyone because we’ve no money.

I’d be shocked if any club spends much. Clubs just aim to survive at this point. Many in the lower leagues will not survive and probably some in the PL. We’re £650m in debt with a stadium that is pretty much rendered useless for at least the next 12-18 months perhaps more. We might not survive with significant cash injection.

Reading a few other team forums a lot are getting dizzy at the thought of us being in real trouble and having to sell Kane just to survive.

it really is quite amazing how we wait to get the stadium built, line up all these events to make us a load of cash to finally compete with the big boys only for something like this to come and wipe all that out. I’m sure there’s a word to use here......

I'm assuming you mean without!

Lewis won't want to see a £1bn asset completely disappear from the balance sheet. He will prop us up one way or another. I'm confident of that.

I see there’s a film crew using the stadium for scenes from “Gangs of London “ tv series. So we’re still earning something from it. I assume we’re not charging the NHS for their use.
