There were whispers around a few weeks back that Pochettino was going to use preseason to work on a new formation??
Any ideas?? Bring back the good old 442? Or is he going to mastermind the new no right back formation?

Its almost certainly going to be a 433 - in some variation.

The biggest change won't be the formation - but rather the ball movement. It looks like Poch is wanting much more ball movement from the CMs, and I think it will take time for the rest of the squad to catch up, and anticipate the passes/flicks from Ndombele, Lo Celso, Ceballos, etc.

We will also see more players running at defenders - opening up spaces for other players. This is an aspect that Eriksen was not really great at - so when I see people talking about all we lose when Eriksen leaves, I don't worry - as I think the new players will be playing a different style.

We will look more like Liverpool and/or Man City in attack - being more aggressive, forcing an opening, and less sitting back waiting for an opening.

Flexibility for my money. We're targeting versatile players.

I think it’ll be something like this...

Lloris
KWP Sanchez Verts Rose
Winks
Dele NDombele
Lo Celso Kane Sonny

Bench: Gazza, Davies, Sess, Foyth, Sissoko, Cellabos, Lucas.

I think it's more likely we'll set up in a 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-1-2 from the players we've signed and been linked to so far. We don't have a genuine holding player who would be good enough in a 4-3-3. It would not be a natural use of Winks' and Ndombele's talents there and Dier and Wanyama aren't good enough.

If we do bring in 2 players to replace Eriksen then I fail to see how we wouldn't primarily operate with a number 10 with three potential options there.

Something like this for example:

Lloris
Aurier/RB------ Sanchez ------ Verts--------- Rose
Ndombele Winks Lo Celso
Alli
Son Kane
Ndombele and Lo Celso are very good in the transition and I think they would be well suited to the flanking midfield spots. Sissoko could easily fulfil that remit on the right side too.

Alli would then play as a sort of enganche with Kane and a partner upfront (Son or Lucas).

I think things would have to change if certain players there were missing but I think that formation would make good use of our likely first XI next season.

With our new signing/strongly linked incomings it looks like 433. This is used by both City and Liverpool to great effect but it poses several issues for our current/likely revised squad.

1) 433 means we need either and/or attack minded, athletic full backs or pace either side of Kane. Otherwise we’ll be lop sided or lacking pace and width throughout the game.

As it stands we need a new RB and whereas Rose is an excellent defender he’s poor going forward (no end product). I know there’s murmurs about Rose potentially leaving and Digne? coming in but I’d stick with Rose for now due to his defensive capabilities, enthusiasm and energy. A new RB is imperative to this and other systems we may play as none of them are good enough.

2) In the middle we’re going to be stacked and for once with quality.

NDombele, Sissoko, Wanyama, Dier in emergencies.

Winks, Lo Celso, Ceballos? Eriksen?

ND, LC, C are all tenacious, energetic and with LC and C both creative. Very excited to see these 3 being involved.

Tough decision to make in terms of who starts.

3) Up top we’re looking at:

Moura, Lamela
Son, Sessegnon
Kane, Diaz?

With a 433 it’s either as per point 1 attacking minded, athletic full backs and/or pace either side of Kane.

For me:

.............................. Lloris ..........................

New RB.... TA/DS..... Vertonghen ..... Rose

..NDombele... Winks/Ceballos... Lo Celso..

........ Moura ....... Kane ............ Son .........

Gazzaniga, DS/Dier, Davies, Winks/Ceballos, Sissoko, Alli? Sessegnon/Diaz/Lamela

My biggest concern is where on Earth does Alli fit into our revised formation? He showed last season that he isn’t good enough to play as one of the three central midfielders and unless we have competent attacking minded and athletic full backs thus leaving Moura/Son out and playing him just off Kane, I just don’t see where he fits in :S.

Would be frustrating if we upgrade so many areas of the team then downgrade the RB slot. KWP looks good but there’s clearly a reason why Foyth was played there multiple times ahead of him.

He’s got mistakes in him, but I honestly think if we played him for a 30+ games a season, the positives would far outweigh the mistakes. Every time he plays (on the right) he’s been involved in assists or creating goals. He’s never gonna get the confidence or defensive experience unless we play him.

Stick Foyth in for tight games against tough opposition where we need a more defensive option. We need to sell at least one of the two senior RBs, they’re not good enough. Getting rid of Aurier frees up a non-HG place for all the Latin midfielders we seem to want to bring in too.

If KWP has a season and doesn’t impress then go for someone like Aarons next year if Norwich go down.

Out of Trippier and Aurier, Aurier is the steadier RB as proven last season especially in CL games. If we are going to trust in KWP, i'd much rather we kept Aurier around than Trippier.

As for other options, as I said in the Foyth thread I think Sissoko possesses more modern day full back attributes than Foyth does. Imo he would do a better job there as an emergency option.

Think this is another thread where it's hard to say until the window is closed. At the moment it looks like a diamond which I'm not a big fan of.

I would imagine that formations are less important than styles of play, including defensive positioning on the pitch.

In the heat of a game, 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 are pretty much interchangeable.

That said, having a '3' in midfield over a '2' and vice versa is still a consideration in games, depending on the opponent.

For the record, I think Poch will be looking at Man City and Liverpool for inspiration for the coming season. Especially Liverpool, who don't look that flashy on paper, but are always more than the sum of their parts.

Multiple formations

4-2-3-1/-4-3-3/4-3-1-2/3-4-3

Loads in the armory.

Yep. He seems to tweak something every year so I expect he will have something up his sleeve or maybe revisit a previous formation.

If Eriksen leaves, I’d like us to pursue a 4-3-2-1. I think that’d suit us quite well.

I'd love to start the season with this lot (or at least try it in pre-season) to provide some attacking intent, although I'm not sure how strong it would be defensively.

KWP Verts Toby Sess
Winks
Lo Celso Ndombele
Moura Kane Son

Lamela, Alli, Sissoko, Rose, Dier, Aurier as rotation/fighting for a starting place.

IMO, I think you have Dele and Lo Celso the wrong way round there.

I'd actually sell both RBs and keep KWP and Foyth. I think Foyth will be very good in games against top attackers (see his perfomance against Sterling and Sane) and KWP will be v good against teams aside from the other top 6.
In other words: if we are facing a Sane/ Martial/ Mane type let's go with Foyth, otherwise release KWP!

I don't think we'll go for a diamond again. I think that was done out of necessity last year as Poch wanted to drop Eriksen and Dele deeper into midfield to help support Winks & Sissoko as he didn't trust them as much as his previous combinations.
