I don't think we'll go for a diamond again. I think that was done out of necessity last year as Poch wanted to drop Eriksen and Dele deeper into midfield to help support Winks & Sissoko as he didn't trust them as much as his previous combinations.
He played diamond formation with Dembele and Dier together too though (e.g. Utd away). Winks & Sissoko only played together once in the first 8 games we played the diamond.

We played a diamond, or changed to one during the game, at the end of the previous season too. Poch has also loved a diamond against the big teams since we beat Man City three of four years ago. Sadly I don't think it's going away.

I hope you're right. Personally, I'm not a fan of it.

The fact that Poch seems keen on Ceballos even after we’ve signed Ndombele suggests to me that he is keen on using a 4-3-3 and wants increased central mid options a la Liverpool.

Whatever it is, I hope he is going to try and do something new/different to other teams.
There have been examples of new managers coming into the league with new formations that have have huge success.
Mourinho - 433 (inverted wingers)
Conte - 352
Man City - 4231 (Nasri, Silva, Navas)

Excited by Hercules post about a new formation, I'm gonna state the obvious and assume he meant for us not world football.

As I've said before we can't guess until we know the signings but a few things I find interesting for a formation are;

Son and Moura we've heard that Poch prefers both more central, certainly Moura, which I find strange if I'm honest, I think having them on the wings and then the ability to drift central due to overlapping fullbacks is good.

Where the fucking hell does dele fit. Arguably he was best when playing in a dare I say it Bergkamp esque role where he wasn't the main outlet but just behind the striker but not really apart of the midfield unit. I've also wondered whether he would suit the Madrid Ronaldo role of coming in on the left because his best ability is timing of runs.

We played just about every formation under the sun last year so I'm not sure how we're going to play something different.

With almost all our full backs being linked away I wonder if it will be a 3511 or 343 we will play? Davies can cover in at left CB. Would also tie in with the amount of midfield players we are looking at with sessegnon able to play left wing to swap with son?

So with Lo Celso being made permanent and Bergwijn looking likely. It looks like we may be moving to a 433? GLC and Ndombele are great driving forward with the ball so could be a good system with them attacking the space behind Kane. Exciting times ahead. We'll need to go all out in the Summer for a new DM of course.

Lloris
Aurier Toby Tanganga Sessegnon
New DM
Ndombele___Lo Celso
Bergwijn__________________________Son
Kane
A lot depends on Jose's plan for Dele as well. I'm hoping he gives up on the idea he's a 10.

Think we will see Ndombele in the DM role and Dele as part of the 3 at least until the summer.

They were not the same, but I do prefer Porto and first time Chelsea in terms of style to for example Mourinho's Inter. Both Porto and Chelsea played in that 4-3-3 we saw against Southampton.

Bergwijn, Son, Lucas are all in the mold of the kind of wingers Mourinho seem to prefer (obviously not exclusively as someone like Cole would be more comparable to Lamela than Son). There has also been quite a few players being a bit of a no. 8/10-hybrid. Deco, Lampard etc. (maybe you could argue Deco and Sneijder were quite pure no. 10 - depends on the starting point I guess). In any case both Lo Celso and Alli could play in that role while someone like N'Dombele would be more comparable to the other no. 8 who has more defensive responsibilities, but still allowed to join attacks - Essien.

I much rather see us moving in that direction than having to rely on Alli as a pure no. 10 playing Lo Celso as a winger or in a midfield two. Alli is not that good - that we should build the rest of the team around him.

I don't think we will see a DM.
I also hope that the cm 3 will be flexible that will see us play 2 players deep at points and not just 1.

With the ball 433
Without 451

Ndombele can absolutely play that role. Especially if we're playing on the front foot and pushing up the pitch, which I'm sure Jose will want us to do once he has the personnel in place.

Also, it's not like we'll have 2 CAMs in front of a DM like City do in their system. Lo Celso and Dele will be happy to get stuck in and track back when required. Winks might be a slightly better fit than Dele there but I'd still go with Dele for his goal threat.

Yeah plus if we're playing with either Aurier/Davies and alternatively Tanganga/Sess as the one attacks/one defends FB options then we're basically playing with 3 at the back which you could argue might stop the need for a pure DM. I'd be interested to see how Winks would do in the 8 role though as you suggested but Jose likes having the half 8/half 10 in Dele as you say. Which is why Bruno would be the perfect upgrade.

The team is starting to take shape - you can see the potential and I'm really excited to see what Jose does with the squad.

I really hope Ndombele isn’t played as the most defensive of the three. It would be such a waste.

I just can’t imagine a Jose team without a defensively-minded midfielder filling in the gaps and intercepting the ball. The way football is going tactically at the moment, this player need to b quick across the ground to be effective.
