Apologies for the very late promised post mortem of the Tranfer window from my end. I have had a few issues to sort out and not had much time to get on here.
At the start of the TW I was told we would be buying quality and not quantity, well we certainly bought quality as for quantity I think that came down to opportunities that presented themselves and the club bought when they could, the Willian saga was a good example.
Some of you will remember I backed the signing of Soldado and keeping Bale at first with my bollocks and then with a £50 donation to SC. I was told of a list of targets and Soldado was high on that list, even when some on here doubted we would sign him I was 100% certain he would be ours after being told by two seperate sources.

As for Bale, at the start of the window, the club were extremely confident of keeping him and were in the process of proving to him our ambition by the players we were starting to buy. The club were expecting up to £50m bids which they were adamant that they would turn down. The stakes were raised when Madrid upted the bid to £86M, but even then the Board doubted that Madrid could fund the transfer and on our terms. It was only the last week that the club recieved confirmation that Madrid could find the funds even then another bid was received, believed to be PSG, but Bale wasn't interested. That was why I was still confident that Bale would stay until the last few days of the window.

As for the special big signing on the final day, well I was given a name and passed on to the mods (after the window shut). I have been told depending on circumstance of the player's club come January we may go back in for him so I am not naming him here. All I will say that a £50m bid was made 2 weeks before the end and agreed by the player's club, but the player wanted to stay for the time being and apart from Blake Griffin everyone on here would have been dancing naked down Tottenham High Road if he would have come, but still some hope, my fear is that unless this could be done under the radar then we will lose out to one of the big boys. As far as I know none of the media got a whiff of this and the club did really well in keeping this in house, I was threatened with death if it got out!.

I made a comment about Baldini being on the Beach for the rest of the year after such activity, but I am told he is still doing a lot of work, especially with the one above and youngsters. so expect some activity in January.

The club tried desperately to get rid of Adebayor, but he didn't want to go hence training with youngsters. All of the activity was planned and part of AVB's project i.e.young players who will serve the club for a few years. I also wanted to say that I have been told we would have spent big even if Bale had stayed, the net spend is a bit of a coincidence. and still leaves us with money to spend next year.

Much appreciated Grey Fox, as they say 'better late than never'.
Now i'm left thinking, what midfielders are worth 50 million? I could of sworn that the big player was Ozil but the possibility of signing this mercurial player in January is tantalizing to say the least.

Thanks Grey Fox - interesting stuff, and glad to hear there's more money for transfers moving forward.

Re: the big one, hmmm.
Reus? Mata? Lewandowski? Hulk? Vidal? I wonder...

I'll assume you want to keep it under wraps though - fair play.

He did say the press never got a sniff of it, so cant be Mata, he also said may go back in Jan, so cant be Ozil...

I always 'felt' it was Pastore, but not really a 50 mil player on current standing...

Only could be Ribery (who i cant see coming even if fee agreed) as a potential 50 mill player, else bad market vales...

I guess could be Draxler

Yeah, my immediate thought was Draxler. Wanting to stick around to see how Schalke do in Champions League. Bigger clubs will be in on him. He's probably going to go for around 50m and that was actually near the value their Chairman/Director said that he wanted for him.

cheers for the info as always grey fox. before the guessing games begin, an interesting point from the post, 'hope we don't lose out to the big boys' means to me that the player isn't already at a big boy club. so, who is worth £50m but is not yet playing for a big boy club?

draxler for me and probably wants to see how the champions league campaign goes and how we're placed in january for next year's competion, a la hazard.

probably not even close but looking forward to january already (y)

edit : nice to see i'm still as slow as i was in the august window with this guessing stuff hahaha.

The media mooted both of those

I would have flown down to London to join in on that naked dance if we had signed Ribéry. The best player (up with the usual suspects) in Europe/the world last season from the best team in Europe/the world last season.

Draxler seems to be a good choice. But 50 million? Is he that good? I've never seen him, and I probably wouldn't fly down to London for the ceremony if he signed for 50 million. But I might have a private dance in my house, that's for sure ;))

Mata I think seemed a good shout, but the media got hold of that. And I somehow can't see Ozil joining us in January. Well, looks like it's back to checking FIFA's most highly rated players...

We weren't linked to Messi, were we? Delayed swap deal with Ronaldo? Monaco want to cash in on Falcao before anyone finds out he's actually a mystic aztec aged over 600 years old? Umm... Ribéry again?

Draxler is the only name that makes sense that springs to mind. I would be very mad to sign Draxler for 50m when Oezil was sold for 42.5m though.

ah, my bad then :p

I just can't see Spurs even trying for Ribery. Could be Draxler but is he 50mil player at 20yo? Could be even Reus but he said he want to stay in Dortmund..

oh wait wait. what about Andres Iniesta? He's delaying making a new deal but as reported he wants 17mio per year which he obviously can not get at Spurs :p

Thanks for the info, GF! Good stuff.

As for the target, I can't see it being Vidal. We're pretty stacked in central midfield. As good as he is, we've got Dembele, Paulinho, Capoue and Sandro there.4 top, top players fighting for two positions. Throw in a fifth and it's almost too much. If we're signing a £50m player it's in a creative and goalscoring position. Pastore isn't worth £50m, neither is Hulk. Mata however is and as much as I doubt that Chelsea would sell to us, at £50m they'd at least be tempted. Draxler would be interesting, but he's reported release clause is at £39 and I think he'll stay at Schalke. Had it been Özil we would have made him a part of the Bale deal imo.

Draxler makes sense. Yeah, he'd cost more than Ozil, but he's much younger and wouldn't be on exorbitant wages so it would be a better value. Seems too good to be true, though. For 50 million I can't imagine who else it could be that we weren't linked to in the summer.

Dortmund wanted Draxler but he ended that by signing a new contract in the summer didn't he?
