We've got a few "cheeky punts"already in the squad, N'Koudou and Jansen to name a few, who end up doing nothing but bloat the squad, take up valuable non-HG spots and end up serving out their time in the stands.
We need quality, not quantity imo. Better one 60m player than three 20m players..
The problem is that even a £60m player can be a punt these days. Man Utd spent £59.7m on Di Maria, who was considered one of the top few players in the world, and look how that turned out.

Sanchez, at £42m, was far from guaranteed to hit the ground running. We could have bought five Foyths for the same money and had £2m to spare...if one or two pay off and the others struggle, that's still pretty good, in both footballing and business terms.

I think the real question is what we're trying to sign: players for the future / to add depth, or someone to instantly improve our starting XI. The latter means not only finding a big transfer fee, but also fighting off interest from big clubs who pay higher wages.

Great response.

It's also worth noting that a player as individualistic as Sanchez would not appeal to Poch, he wants players he can coach. That's why potential is much more appealing to us and I don't mind that one bit.

Sure a 60M player CAN be a punt, but you're much more likely to hit on a 60M player than a 2M player. The problem with your Foyth theory (2 payoff, the other 3 need to be sold) is that at a low initial purchase price you're probably going to have trouble selling them if they don't pan out. Then you're stuck with their salaries on your books,

At least with a Di Maria, Man U could still sell him. They take a loss on the transfer fee, but someone else still values him enough to pay him and take him on.

It's certainly true that there are no cast-iron guarantees in the transfermarket - not evwn at 60m. The odds on a hit-signing should improve considerably at this price level though...

And it is also true that Di Maria (and you could add Pogba to the list as well) flopped at United. But that cold also have been caused by dramatic mis-managent of the player by Moyes, Mourinho et al. With Poch as our manager, chances of something similar happening here are considerably smaller imo...

First of all ... yes the austrian league is shocking - I didn't grew up supporting one of these clubs (apart my home town club in the 4th tier of austria) so I don't follow the league extensively.
One thing I can say is that Salzburg is miles apart from all the other clubs, they have an excellent youth setup and scouting. Mane, Naby Keita are 2 examples at Liverpool ... so they know a good talent when they see one.

I noticed Hannes Wolf when Salzburg were magnificend in the youth league, they even won the competition under their current coach Marco Rose. Wolf is a left footed number 10, he's technically gifted, quite fast and aggressive with intelligent runs and passes.
He is surely one of the biggest offensive talents in austria, if not the biggest since Arnautovic imo

It would be a huge step from austrian bundesliga to a PL top4 candidate... Mane took the stepping stone Saints, Naby Keita Leipzig...
But if you want to get him at a reasonable price, you have to risk it - look at Foyth
In the few EL games I saw from Salzburg he was lively, creative and aggressive - 1 goal 2 assists in 5 games this season is quite ok.
Don't know much about his mentality tbh - strikes me a bit of an typical 19yo talent with too much money, posing in his car and so on..

Overall I would like the thought of an austrian at Spurs - Wimmer didn't worked out so well
He would probably be better off going to a mid-table club or Saints (more so since Hasenhüttl became their coach, which is btw the best austrian coach at the moment - think he will keep them up)

Btw I meant our Sanchez, not Alexi.

Just announced that he will move to Leipzig in summer ... what a surprise

Funny thing is... he told a newspaper back in november, that the media should stop talking about leipzig being their big brother, and players from salzburg often go there - he stated that Salzburg players no longer think about going to Leipzig :ROFLMAO:

Looks ok. Personally I’d like us to buy a proper CM.
