Don't get the love for Redknapp at all. With absolutely no encouragement from the FA he decided that the England job was his, and sacked off the club who were paying his wages and which had backed him through his court case so that he could waste his time daydreaming and drawing "HR4England" inside little hearts on the back of old envelopes.

I remember seeing an interview where he said: "I was supposed to get the England job." I can't find that interview now, but I did find this:

https://vgtips.co.uk/harry-redknapp-thought-england-job-mine/

This is included in that link- from his autobiography:

He {Redknapp} says: “I’ll admit I thought the job was mine. On April 1, I was contemplating the way forward for England with Brendan Rodgers as my assistant – and on April 29 the FA offered the job to Roy Hodgson.

“Everyone said I was the people’s choice, the only choice. All the senior players seemed to be up for me to get the job. I got quite a few text messages at the time from players saying they would love me to manage England: Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, John Terry."

So there you have it- proof from his own mouth that, despite not being offered the job he was planning as if he had it, purely because some players and some of the media said they wanted him to have it. Planning for a job he didn't have and wasn't going to be offered, at a time when the club he worked for needed their manager to be completely focused.

Fuck him.
Those of us who went to Shakhtar Donetsk away haven’t forgiven him for playing the reserves that night.

Yea I get that but if you’re him that’s the ultimate job so if you think an offer is coming then you start to prepare for it and in football whispers go far. He wasn’t the most profession and I think levy got tired of that but he was a very good manager for us got us playing some beautiful stuff and everyone in the country thought the England job would be his to be fair.

For me it was taking off Rafa and putting Parker on instead of a striker when Villa were there for the taking. He thought he was better than us. Told us this was as good as it gets. But it was as good as it got for him.

Except for the people who were tasked with making the decision...

By his own admission he was making plans for England rather than concentrating on the job he was actually paid to do.
During the month of April 2012 Spurs drew with Sunderland and lost to Norwich and QPR. We finished in 4th, one point behind Arsenal and on the same goal difference. If he had been concentrating, I think we probably would have taken at least another point out of those games, and therefore finished in 3rd.

At the same time, Redknapp was quite happy to tell the world that he wanted Chelsea to win the Champions League, despite knowing that if we finished 4th and Chelsea did win the CL, we wouldn't qualify for it.

And then came the Villa game, in which he decided to protect his bonus for finishing in the top 4 rather than trying to actually win the game and ensure qualification for the CL.

To my mind, all the pretty football in the world can't justify any of that.

God i'd forgotten about that villa game.

He was never one of us. He always defended campbell, spoke about vieras bravery for wanting to join and as you said wanted chelsea to win the champions league.

He gave us some great memories but yes telling the fanbase he was as good as it gets was never going to go down well and I think offered a small insight into the real harry redknapp.

I remember cringing so often whenever he spoke, I loved a lot of the results and the football was often great but I always felt it was marriage of convenience rather than a great fit.

Much as I loved Redknapp as our manager and absolutely didn’t want him to get the England job, the way he took his eye off the ball during all the speculation and how we suddenly picked up when Hodgson was confirmed left a bad taste in my mouth for me.

I probably still wouldn’t have sacked him but I can see why Levy did on this occasion.
