I think it's clear that avb wants to play a 4-3-3 but do we have the players for it at the moment?

What do you see as our best formation and personnel up until January where we might be able to strengthen?

Lloris
Walker-Dawson-Vertongen-Bae
Siggurdson-Sandro-Dembele
Dempsey-Ade-Bale

Now I have no idea how that team would perform, unlikely Dawson will get the nod but with the losses of big players like King, Mod and Vdv I really think we need someone with experience and passion in the spine of the team.

Don't get me wrong, Dawson's hoofs get on my nerves as much as anyone but I feel that vert and gallas are not strong enough aerially to deal with the more robust strikers.

Also I'd have Dempsey over Lennon, we need someone who can contribute goals in the front 3.

Thoughts?

IMO, no.

Keep one of Gio and VDV and maybe they could've played on the right of a front 3 and pushed Siggy into midfield. Sign Moutinho and Siggy can play there.

I am still in shock that we have replaced Van Der Vaart and Modric with 2 of Fulham's finest so too early for me to think of formations

I do have a question though, are all our signings available to play today ?

He said he would like Hudd back from loan(when we tried to send him on loan, once he gets fitness) so that he can use him in a 433 when we do make the transition to 433

Exactly the team i would put out with the squad.. that midfield has some bite to it.
i have always thought Lennon works very well on the left wing cutting in, its just that Bale is awful on the right, with Dempsey i hope we give that combination a go..

For me this is our strongest team (below) and the way I expect us to line up with the replacements for injuries/suspensions in brackets below the starters. I still think we're a bit short of cover in wide areas (inc at fullback, with Naughton covering both sides, though I guess Vertoghen or Gallas could fill in at LB and Kaboul can do a job RB). Such a shame we missed out on Moutinho as he'd add another dimension to the midfield and could provide a more seamless link between defence and attack within the 3. A trio of Sandro, Moutinho and Dembele would've been fantastic. Am still hoping we can add Moutinho in Jan as we obviously have the money to have agreed a fee until the goalposts were apparently moved...
Also, I think away from home against the likes of Utd, City and Chelsea (ie- games where we're likely to have less possession) I can see the midfield 3 being more combative and defence-minded with Parker and Sandro playing behind Demeble (a lot of steel in there!) but at home when against teams who usually park the bus and play for a point, we only really need one defensive minded player in the 3 IMO. Bearing in mind we had Livermore and Jenas in the middle for the last 15 minutes vs WBA we have strengthened that area considerably and with Parker and a fully fit Hudd in there too I don't think it's a bad centre midfield at all but Moutinho would've been an excellent addition. Am happy with the squad and how it fits AVB's style of play- Keep the faith! COYS!!!

4-3-3 actually looks like a big, physical, pacey and technical team.

Lloris

Walker Kaboul Vertonghen BAE

Sandro Dembele Siggy

Dempsey Ade Bale

Injury's could be a problem though.

That's the team for me. Injuries definately a concern. Friedel, Lennon, Defoe and Dawson are as good as any other backups you'll get outside of a top 2/3 Prem team but the central midfield options are not quite up to scratch. Livermore still needs more development and Huddlestone just doesn't do it for me. Also, Naughton is the only full back cover (I wouldn't want to take Vertonghen away from the centre) so light there.

Just reading these line ups is quite depressing. On paper we look mid-table. Serious problems if we get injuries in certain areas.

You guys are crazy not putting Parker in the best XI. He was our player of the season and will probably be captain once he returns from injury.

No mate, they will be in the stands.

Could be interesting to see Bale/Lennon reaction on the pitch.

Dembele is key, but if he is injured maybe its time for Carroll to step up. Got great revies in pre-season and hasnt gone on loan (yet) so maybe this kid can provide the guile in MF.

We wanted Moutinho, Willian, and Damaio/Remy - none with premiership experience.

We got Dembele and Dempsey. Whist the latter is not terribly exciting, both have lots of PL experience, both work hard (something i think AVB appreciates) and both can develop further with the quality of players arounds them.

I think we'll line up like this:

...................... ....Lloris

Walker...... .Kaboul.....Vertonghen.....BAE

. Sigurdsson .....Sandro.........Dembele
........................
.....Dempsey.... Adebayor........Bale

The first thing that strikes me is the physical nature of the team. No short players like Lennon, Defoe, Parker, Modric and VDV who were all 5'9" or under. In come Dempsey, Adebayor, Sandro, Dembele & Siguardsson who are all above 6'0".

The second thing is the balance of the team. Vertonghen, BAE, Dembele and Bale are all left footed whilst Kaboul, Walker, Siguardsson and Dempsey are all right footed. In defense and midfield we are very symmetrical with like for like players on both sides.

Other than the goals of Adebayor, he also laid on a number of assists and both Bale and Dempsey are able to get beyond the striker and both can score goals. I would expect that between the front 3 they would score about 50 goals between them. (obviously Defoe will chip in with a few on top of that). From midfield I would expect at least 15 goal between Siguardsson and Dembele. That's 65 goals from those players alone, 1 less goal than we scored last season (and BAE has already scored!)

I think that we have seen a move away from the reliance on individual brilliance and instead have moved towards team work.

Obviously the problem with this team is that it's paper thin. If any of these players get injured, other than in CB, we really don't have like for like replacements ready to come in. This will be a big worry and hopefully it will be enough to get us to January without to many problems.

Yeah for me Parker has to play when fit, he could even play in front of Sandro with Dembele next to him and press higher up the pitch in tricky away games.
