A grim week for English clubs in Europe has made it almost certain that the Premier League will miss out on an extra place in next season's revamped Champions League, with the Bundesliga instead poised to be awarded a fifth spot based on German clubs' collective performances in UEFA competitions.

TLDR
Champions league clubs don't drop in Europa League and therefore makes it easier to win and qualify for UCL

So the author is saying that a benefit of not qualifying for the CL this season is that we might qualify for it next season by winning the EL?

I think the author of this piece has a different definition of "benefit" than is conventionally understood.

If the objective is qualifying for the CL then there's literally no benefit in not qualifying for it. That's the opposite.

To dare to do or to dare not to do, that is the question.

I can live with the europa next season. I don't think we're ready for the champions league and would fear a 'Newcastle ' type season. It wouldn't be my preference but certainly not the end of the world.
