How would you fill the Harry Kane shaped hole?

The transfer window is done and we have to move forward with what we have, we have a couple of new promising recruits which might enable us to try something different.

So for a bit of fun I thought it'd be interesting to see how each of us would like to see solve the Harry Kane dilemma with what we have available. We have one of the very best ever managers who built his career on tactically tweaking game to game to combat the opposition and I'm excited to see what he does as historically he has used a target man. We have seen how Poch coped without Kane and had varying levels of success with it also so how would you like to see us go about from now until the end of the season?

Well quite obviously there was no better option in the world of football that was available to be more of a target man than Lucas Moura. Seeing as so far we've scored so few goals without Kane I'd go with the 1-10 formation and hope to hell we can defend and keep a clean sheet.

By going on the internet and rambling incoherently about things i made up in my head until i feel slightly better for a couple of minutes but actually worse in the long term so do more ranting to keep those endorphins flowing.

Oh you mean in the team? I dont know, Berbatov? What was the question?

I'd go with a front 6 looking something like this

----Ndombele Gedson
Moura Lo Celso Bergwijn
------------Son

Alli is a good player and pops up with goals but doesn't offer enough in play for me.
It'll be interesting to see whether Bergwijn will be ready to make the step up or not.

I want us to build on the pass and move game Lo Celso has helped us develop.

Lamela and Winks can be subs and work in that playing style.

I agree with your team except replace Moura with Sessegnon.

The same way Pochettino did, we've scored a fair few goals when he's been missing before, JM just has to alter our style of play till he returns ?‍♂️

Think we should solve the Alli conundrum at the same time by using him as a false 9. Have him play a similar role to Firmino. Basically this:

Lloris
Aurier ---- Sanchez/JT - Toby ---- Davies

Ndombele Winks Lo Celso

SB/Lucas-- Dele --- Son

Winks to hold for now, Alli to sit deep ish, attract the CBs and create overloads in midfield, the wingers to run in the channels and be the most advanced players. Our best way of attacking is vertical through passes from Ndombele and Lo Celso, we have the passers and runners to be able to play that way. But it does need the full backs to open up the space on both sides.

Exactly how I'd deal with it too, also feel it allows the most rotation as you have Lamela who can play on wing/false 9 and in midfield we have Gedson, Dier, Skipp who can play in the rotation so I feel this is the best way to combat burning players out.

Either a 4-2-3-1 with Lo Celso and Winks as the '2' and Moura,Dele,Bergwijn behind Son or (preferably) a 4-3-3 with Winks anchoring and Lo Celso and N'Dombele either side (which obviously needs Tanguy fit) and Son central with Moura and Bergwijn right and left. If N'Dombele not fit and JM feels Gedson up to the task, then simple swap.

Personally saw enough signs of decent football and adapting a system to suit the lose of Kane to make me believe we can win games without him, but the crucial point will be Son, Moura and Dele putting the chances away when they come - which they have done in the past but haven't done well enough in the last few games (pinning hopes on them having been a bit fatigued so not quite as sharp as usual ??).

Actually intrigued to see how Mourinho copes with the task ahead - at least we will play through the midfield (where Lo Celso looks excellent), which to my mind is far more preferable than had we bought a slow lump, stuck him up top and let Alderweild hoof it too him for 90 mins.

We were linked with a) Islam Slimani, b) Mario Balotelli, c) Willian Jose, d) Fernando Llorente and e) Olivier Giroud.

So all we need to do is scour the squad for someone who a) is 6ft 2 inches, b) is occasionally a bit of a violent nutter, c) speaks Portuguese, d) is immobile and e) has a silly beard...

Which can only mean...

:wideyed: :wideyed: :wideyed: :ROFLMAO:

To be fair, he'd work well with Dele and he knows how to find the space between two centre-backs. He can certainly head a ball and I still love him for that last-minute goal against West Ham on his debut too. That was from right-back so God alone knows what he could do from the number nine position...

Plus it would keep him from playing in centre midfield... (y)

I would play Dele up front with the others breaking past him. Dele can hold up and slide them in.

At least then when he inevitably coughs up the ball it's in the final third rather than the middle of the pitch.

I think it would be crazy not to give Troy a bit of time, sub appearances etc. He's not the answer, but this is an opportunity to take a look at him that shouldn't be missed.

Should give Troy some opportunities off the bench. Worst case scenario, hes not ready but it wont matter much because he isnt starting. Best case is he may surprise and even score a few goals which would be a welcome stop gap until Kane gets back

Definitely agree that Troy should get a chance, and pretty sure he will. Have a feeling that when he wasn't making the bench a few weeks ago it was 'cos he was coming back from illness or injury, and now he's o.k plus Mourinho has had a full weeks training with the whole team (where you'd assume Troy very involved with all the offensive work) then very hopeful he'll get minutes - especially with the Southampton 'extra' game in midweek.

What qualities do people think Alli will bring as a no9? I just don't see it

none as a traditional “9.” But I think the others above have alluded to how it could work. He’d have to play withdrawn in the middle with the wide forwards ahead of him running the channels.

you’ve got to play the ball to his feet then have him release the speed guys quickly. He couldnt do his dwell on the ball routine.

wouldn’t make a ton of sense against a parked bus, but against City tmrw, I’d give it some real consideration.

Alternatively, he should just play Troy. He is after all a Striker regardless of his age.
It might not be that he's not good enough, just that it might be a bit too early to throw him to the wolves. I think i'd keep him on the bench for now, giving him 10-15 here and there before we can place all the responsibility on him. One bad game and the fans will be hurling abuse at the poor lad. Plenty on here were doing it to Skipp last season.

Disappointed we couldn’t do a deal for giroud. I know people will scoff but the french national team tried to play with lots speedy, skill full forwards...grizou , mbappe, dembele. It didn’t work. Giroud made everyone m around him play better and so it was worth sacrificing a more « exciting » player. One of the key reasons we won the World Cup.

It’s far better to hang in for a few months than to buy someone substandard. Other signings are all great.

#9, Dm and Rb in the summer and we’re good to go. Not a perfect squad but good enough. With all of this years signings finding another level having had time to bed in.
