I was discussing this with a colleague today.

The media, supporters and pundits have abbreviated Villas-Boas' name out of laziness, but personally I think it shows a lack of respect. You wouldn't hear other managers being referred to as AF, RM etc....so why has Villas-Boas? I know it may be easier especially for discussions on here, but it's not necessary on Television or in the news and needs to change.

I honestly prefer AVB over Villasch Boasch. There is something strange about the pronounciation.. I suppose that's how the portuguese would pronounce it, but it just doesn't sit right with me. Sounds very silly.

Because Villas-Boas doesn't cause my brain to burst into periodic renditions of 'PYT' by Michael Jackson every time it's mentioned, that's why.

I think that most people I speak to about football don't know that Villas-Boas is pronounced like that, so they probably think I'm having shum short of Shteve McClaren-Shtyle weird accent episode when I say it.

I'm still not a fan of it being abbreviated. The only people who can get away with using their initials as their name are JR, PT, R2-D2, and Mr T.

Yeah that's kind of my point though, it almost sounds pretentious. I haven't yet decided if I want to pronounce it right or not, so I'm going with AVB. ;)

It's like with all foreign names, they are impossible to pronounce the proper way, so why not just say it straightforward.

Yeah, it's a huge lack of respect whenever the Sir Alex Ferguson is referred to as SAF or Fergie isn't it?

For me it's his name, it's in the vernacular now. He doesn't seem to mind, neither should we. I'd love to call him Villas-Boas but for sake of time it's much simpler to type three letters.

Maybe you should call him Luís André de Pina Cabral e Villas-Boas then?

I must be being thick as, but who the hell is RM?! Either they're examples and AF is Alex Ferguson by coincidence, or I'm being a bellend.

EDIT: And as soon as I hit post, I remember Mancini...

If he's happy to wear AVB on his spurs training gear then fuck it, that's what I'll call him.

Plus anyone that says it as 'Viyash-Bowash' sounds like a tit anyway.

THOWIG was presumably getting paid for the conversation though, so probably a fair way off futile in the eyes of some at least. My theory: which other EPL managers have three letters in the acronym of their forename(s) and last name(s) ? Probably no one. Nobody else has the rhythm to make the acronym catchy.

Actually, having defended the subject I do feel like I died a little bit writing that.

Agree with the OP and it shows a lack of respect and laziness for me, but we are living in the text and twitter age where everything is shortened.

Personally I don't use AVB - I may have a few times in the past but not anymore. I never used the abbreviations VDV and BMJ either, these are footballers and managers not buzzwords or units of measurement.
