Tottenham will launch a bid for Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez in the coming weeks.
Although the England international is recovering from surgery on the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, the White Hart Lane club are convinced he will be back in action before the end of the year.
Southampton have already fielded bids of £25million from Manchester United for Luke Shaw and £20m from Liverpool for Adam Lallana and are now braced for Tottenham's opening gambit for Rodriguez.

The 24-year-old was in excellent form for Southampton prior to his injury scoring 17 goals and was pushing for inclusion in Roy Hodgson's World Cup squad.
Tottenham, who could yet appoint Southampton coach Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager, want more homegrown players to blend with the large influx of foreign players they invested heavily in last summer.
Some of those will go with Romanian centre-back Vlad Chiriches, Erik Lamela, Etienne Capoue, Roberto Soldado and the more established Jan Vertonghen all attracting interest - predominantly from Italian clubs.

No thanks, not until he has recovered fully. Thats a nasty, long term injury and i dont believe we would even think about a move for him at the moment.

Throughout this season I've been thinking we should make a move for him but I agree with others in that it's now too much of a risk.

No meniscus injury though, so it's a pretty straight-forward recovery for him. I'd be fine with it at the right fee.

Why do newspapers talk about transfers in such melodramatic style?

braced for Tottenham's opening gambit

It's not like anyone is going to be thrown across the room when that email hits the inbox or will be holding onto their desk for dear life when the phone starts to ring.

It's a little boring to say waiting to send Mr Levy's email to the spam folder upon receipt.

unfortunate with the injury, could have been a good signing as a utility player, up top & on the wing. could have taken the place of 2/3 players like lennon/sig/townsend etc

Rodriguez - Soldado - Lamela
Eriksen - Sandro - Paulinho

....actually to be fair the amount of midfielders we have you could arrange that loads of ways..

Would definitely not go for him given they will still want really good money for him and the uncertainty around his knee at this point. Plenty of pacy, quality finishing types that know how to run off the last defender.

Not unless he was £10m or something, we saw how Rossi's knee went again not long after the first injury, too big a risk

Is he much better than someone like danny Ings? Both good finishers who play off the shoulder. I know Ings is to be tested at top level but is younger, and injury free.

I'd be delighted to see us pickup Ings along with a Prem-proven option such as Remy or Lukaku. He seems rather loyal to that club though, and genuinely excited to have a go with them in the Prem.

Its not just the physical injury, its what it does inside your head. He's a risk.

The way Kane ended the season I don't know if we need him. Kane is 4 years younger and has impressed me off the ball as much as he has with his goals and positioning for a few good chances.
