Spurs close in on deal to sign Keisuke Honda in the January transfer window

Tottenham are set to leapfrog a host of top European clubs by landing Japan sensation Keisuke Honda in January on a free transfer.
The 27-year-old forward, whose contract with Russian side CSKA Moscow expires on December 31st, is a target for a number of leading clubs.
Juventus, Monaco and Liverpool are all known to be keen on signing Honda, while AC Milan nearly agreed a £5million deal to buy him over the summer.
However, Andre Villas-Boas has been patient and is now ready to bring in the exciting frontman for nothing on January 1st.
Honda can play as a striker or on either wing and is famed for his pace, power and explosive left-foot shot.
He revealed earlier this week he was mulling over a number of offers from different clubs and was expecting to make a decision soon.
‘I have a number of options – when the time comes I will make a decision,’ Honda said.
‘I have now decided I will leave my club at the expiry of the contract, everything else will be decided soon.’
Honda currently scoops around £70,000-a-week at CSKA, but Spurs, who are boosted by not having to pay a transfer fee, are ready to offer big wages to get the deal done.
If the transfer goes through, it would be a notable coup for Villas-Boas who has made adding to his forward options a key priority for the new year.
Wouldn't say no on a free, i've always liked him.

Superb player, but where the hell will he play, his best position will give less time to Eriksen and Holtby and unless we go for 3 rotating AM's behind a striker i don't see a fit, i see a fit for Levy with the words "free transfer" though :woot: ..

We have to lose the starting 11 mentality and think like a club that is looking to compete for multiple trophies. We need to bring in quality players when we can. Depth is a good thing.

Yeah i get that, i am not in any way part of the first 11 mentality and havn't shown to be in my posts, think about this signing for a minute and the sheer number of players we would have for the 3 in the 4231.
Holtby, Eriksen, Townsend, Lamela, Sigurdsson, Lennon, Chadli..
Maybe Sigurdsson would make way?
I think the whole depth thing is a moot point in that position, we need a couple of defenders.

He could work as part of a 4-3-3 I guess. Long-term I could see Sigurdsson and Lennon leaving us as they don't really fit the system and there are doubts over their consistency to play at our level. I think Eriksen would be deployed on the left with Chadli and Honda would be with Holtby in the most advanced CM 'Moutinho' role. It wouldn't aid Carroll's development though so i'm not sure we need him. I could see us going in for him as an investment though and possibly use him for a couple of years until Carroll (hopefully) has become top quality and a ready made replacement.

Why are we looking at this dude? I've always liked him but we've got shit loads.

We should be looking to improve on Rose, Naughton and Walker. By improve I don't necissarily mean replace

Honda can play as a striker, CAM, or winger. Fits into a 433, 4231 and and 4411 quite well. You don't turn down the ability to sign a €15-20m on a free because he will add competition to the squad.

I agree it would be silly to turn him down, i am a big fan of his, if he did come in i don't want to be in the situation where he plays and guys like Holtby/Eriksen are sitting out and Sigurdsson/Lennon are getting game time.
I don't think there would ever be a time where we would play him as a striker, the whole, he plays across the front 3 is a myth for the majority of players that get the tag.

You do if you're already well stacked with quality in all those positions and when we need other positions filled. Plus he's 27 and on £70k per week

27, the same age as Rooney, Falcao, Hulk, and Moutinho, and younger than Ronaldo, Iniesta and Ribery. 27 isn't old.

I'm not saying he's old, just looking for his last, big contract.

VDV was 27 when we signed him and we all know how great he was for us.

Yes sign on a free and if he does not work out we can make a quick £8-10 million in the summer

I would imagine shirt sales would cover a lot of his wages, plus the added commercial potential we would attract from Asia. I like the player too, it's a win win situation IMO.

Siggy doesn't look comfortable on the wings and is inconsistent so may be we can use him as an AM with Honda and Chadli using the LW

He's a top class player for free. What is there to question?

Hope it comes off.
