Premier league is still more popular in america than mls. Far more popular in the rest of the world. Time difference alone will restrict their audience.

They dont need global viewership. The nfl has bigger contracts than the EPL.

If they abandoned the salary cap and paid european wages, the locals would watch their own league rather than the EPL.

They do need global viewership. Why do you think the nfl are looking at a london franchise?

America is the superpower at the moment but they are losing ground everyday.

The amount the Chinese pay for premier league to rights is tiny compared to the rest of Asia.

I'm not sure under their government how many foreign games they are allowed to show but if it doesn't matter then China is the next big market for the premier league. Man city getting a foothold there before everyone else will be massive commercially if more games are shown there.

I think you are all missing the point here. This deal is not about next season. It looks like a 10-20 year vision. It seems to me like the owners of Man City are hedging their bets.

They are planning a new stadium for New York City FC. They have now aligned them selves with the Chinese government. Im not sure where the new City China team will be, but most likely Beijing or Shanghi.

What they have done is hedge their bets by making franchises in the biggest markets of the worlds two biggest economies.

The Chinese government have pledged to make football compulsory and to fund its team to being competitive at the world cup. The US MLS is already about the 5th or 6th best attended league in the world.

I would say that the Abu Dhabis are positioning themselves for the day when the EPL is no longer the league where all the best players go. NYCFC could be the 21st centuries Real madrid, so why not get it now whilst its cheap.

Jackson Martinez just gone to Ghanzou Evergrande for 42m euros. Ramires gone for 25m. Things are getting going.

I think that Abu Dhabi are most likely trying to divest from oil and property as the first is finite and the 2nd has been a failure locally (although their foreign portfolio is very impressive)

Fine, but you dont get involved in football to make money. And the amount of money to make in football is insignificant compared to their other ventures

I'd say they are in football for the Global exposure and marketing potential it brings to them. They are advertising Etihad to one of the largest audiences in the world.

Going to be a great boon for FFP - or whatever the hell is left of it - isn't it... The new wave of football oligarghs paying obscene amounts for over the hill players which helps out the previous wave of football oligarghs balance the books on their financially doped clubs. However, I guess those in glass houses shouldnt throw stones.. we did flog Paulinho over there for crazy money!

Loads of empty seats at their ground yesterday. It's not usually that bad is it?

Quite often is for games against bottom half sides, especially now that City can't win the league. They can point to 99% of the seats being sold as much as they want but loads of season ticket holders don't go to the "less important" games.

Absolutely ridiculous how much money they are spending this summer. Over £120m just on full backs, then £35m on a keeper and £40m+ on Silva. And they're still after Mbappe and Sanchez. There's going to be a lot of pressure on Pep to deliver the league title this season.

There will be but it'll be the same for Conte and Mourinho too. I'm currently trying to work out how all these clubs can come out with a season that represents good value for what has been invested.

Don't worry, FFP will put a stop to all that...
