Looked like we had a real player on our hands when he first joined: technically gifted and a hard grafter. It didn’t work for him in the end at Spurs, and it hasn’t really worked out for him anywhere else (as far as I’m aware).

Makes you wonder if, as others have said, his attitude isn’t quite what it should be for a top professional.

Hope he does well for Blackburn anyway.

My memory may be fading but I just remember him being a bit of a headless chicken running around a lot. But a hard worker nonetheless.

Signing announced, feeling very ITK now! A lot of praise but we shall see how he does, just need him to work hard and the Rovers fans will take to him.
Keep us updated with how he does and how the fans take to him. Would be interesting to see as I always like to keep an eye on our former players and want them to do well.
Would be nice to meet in the cup, to show him some love.

And to you. My brother in law is from Blackburn so they’re one of the teams I look out for these days. Although we still fall out when talking about that League Cup Final...

You are officially on my shitlist. I read that and thought what League Cup Final then I remembered. How do you thump Chelsea 5-1 and then get outplayed by a team featuring a 38-year-old Mark Hughes?

I liked him. To echo other posters he always seemed to give it his all, liked to tackle and press and seemed to have a decent touch on him. Used to link up quite well with Defoe and scored a couple of decent goals himself.

P.S. Here's a wee video of his time with Spurs:

Seemed to have a good all round game without excelling at anything. Appeared to have a great attitude.

Fans like him because he works hard and does his best.

Just on the ability side he fell short for a top 6 Prem side. Hope he does well in the Championship.

I think fairly recently on SSN or BT Sport, Tim Sherwood said some pretty bad words about him. Mainly about how he would pump up the crowd showing he cares but in reality doing very little to offer or change anything.

Bit rich coming from Tim fucking Sherwood isn't it? As a manager all he did was mouth off and act like the big man while delivering absolutely fuck all. ****.

Unless I am missing something all Sherwood said was Holtby was a good lad but not at our level.

Saying Holtby used to “kid on the crowd” could be construed negatively but not really a reason to have a go at Sherwood.

Tim Sherwood is enough reason to have a go at Tim Sherwood, the rest is just optional extras

I couldn’t stand Sherwood but having a go because of something he hasn’t said is unnecessary.

He had Holtby 1 month and loaned him out. Poch likes large midfielders, easy to see why he might not like him, but Sherwood, I don't know. Maybe Holtby is a shit behind the scenes but not heard anything like that.

Fair enough. I was going on the basis of what the other poster said Sherwood had said. If that was misrepresented then fair enough.

Sherwood is still a fucking bellened though. I stand by that either way.

And Sherwood hasn’t said anything like that.

Sherwood was at the club in a different role and judged Holtby as not good enough for us.

Haven’t seen or heard anything to suggest he was wrong on this occasion.

Agree, Sherwood was the only Spurs manager I ever hated.

I feel a lot of people are fond of Holtby for non footballing reasons and some may have gone a bit Ott.

Holtby was mostly used as an AM here, I know that in Germany he often played deeper. He was a fairly decent technical player but he was also both very slow and not particularly effective for us.

While capable of incisive passing, at Spurs it was mostly inconsistent, and he rarely provided an offensive threat but also struggled to set a tempo at the same time. There was talent there just something not right in his decision making maybe.

He did work hard for us and was actually a pretty good tackler and presser. There was a belief he might actually do better in a deeper position. I think in Germany he did play in that role on occasion. Similarly, when playing for the German U21 team he looked a world beater. The slower pace suited him.

Will he do well for Blackburn? Difficult to say as I don't know how he has developed. However, he provides, for a championship player, very good technique on the ball and a lot of fight. His weaknesses are he is very slow, and not really a consistant enough passer.

Ultimately, I think he will be a good player for the championship, but I would be cautious of the Ott reaction. He was a popular player for us, but not really a very good one.

He had decent vision and passing, but would always come too short for the ball and wasn't much of a goal threat for a No.10. He was a bit of a headless chicken without the ball with no positional awareness and would needlessly fly into tackles. Maybe he's matured since then.
