If rumours are to be believed his behind the scenes attitude is questionable. It's possible we are loaning him in the hope that he matures and comes back to fulfill his potential.

Depends who you believe. Others said that the backroom staff all love him and that he's really popular. Always seemed to work hard too, perhaps he doesn't follow instructions well, not sure

This was a really strange one in the end. Nice lad, hard worker, and showed flashes of the potential he has but I got the impression he just didn't seem to have the temperament to stick to a role and follow instructions. Plus you never really knew what position was best for him...

As much as I like Holtby I think it solves a positional headache, his best position IMO is somewhere between an 8 & 10, we need similar cm/dm hybrids for both positions in Pochs 4231.
Good luck for the season Lewis.

Shame, but that's 3 Spurs managers and 1 Fulham manager that didn't do much with him. Struggles by not having a position.. still, Spurs will make a tidy profit on him so I guess that's all that matters.

I think his versatility is both appealing and also his downfall.

As others have indicated he needs to really pick a position and learn the positional discipline for that role. I love his verve and enthusiasm but if we can criticise Townsend for lacking tactical discipline I'm afraid the same applies here.

Being reported in German press that the buy-on fee option is 7m euros.

So about £5.5 million, unless the Euro takes a sudden nosedive between now and next year.

I think he's worth a little more that that, to be honest. He's still a very good player despite not quite being up to this level.

I agree he's certainly worth more, but it keeps him away from a Prem rival and gets a strong salary for a fringe player off the books.

I think thats the key point, his wages. Good little player but we cant have a player on what I heard he's on not contributing to the first team (meaning as a starter). We had to get rid asap or risk another Bentley situation.

I don't think it would ever get quite to that considering Holtby's talent and determination, but I think you're spot on with the idea. We just cannot afford to have a player on the fringes the managers don't choose to use at the salary he's pulling in.

There was the story about Freund in the q&a session during the north American tour, saying Holtby had to go - search for it on Spurs chat.
Or it could just be a case of numbers and Holtby was easier to offload than some others.

I believe Holtby himself played the biggest part. I have the feeling he isnt patient enough and rather demands a first team place than fight for it...

Worth noting, Hamburg's director of sport today said in reference to Holtby:

"We have long term plans for Lewis."

Would suggest to me that they plan as of this moment to trigger the clause, and Holtby has likely played his last for Spurs.

I was at Holtby and Sandro's last games for us.

It hurts :(
