I'm sill unconvinced.

All I am seeing at the moment is a team bereft of particular ideas. A structure that gives up possession, but not in a solid manner - we are giving up a lot of opportunities and the last two games for instance certainly makes me feel our defensive displays have been luck rather than judgement. As it has simply been down to poor finishing that we have still be in the game.

Attacking wise it seems that there is no particular style of play, other than getting the ball up the pitch quickly - made painful to watch by not having a focal point to bring others in to play. We haven't been creating lots of chances and haven't particularly had consistent pressure in the oppos half. It seems we are reliant on moments of inspiration from individuals rather than putting in better performances.

I am glad there has been an upturn in results, but I am not convinced currently that we have a sustainable identity or plan (like Poch did - certainly for 3 years). But we do have better individuals that many teams in the league - so even though we aren't playing well, someone is dragging us through.
Agreed. I’m glad that we’ve got some togetherness and fighting spirit back, but it just looks like we’re gonna get beaten convincingly and maybe lose a couple in a row pretty much every game we play at the minute.

So, allowing for a bit of fine tuning/development and adjusting to whatever team he had, basically the same concepts and approach he used at Porto.

And then Chelsea.

After that, Inter.

Oh, and then Real Madrid.

(We'll skip the recent history...)

New approach indeed.
It seems you are determined to be proven right in your views. Well time will tell. I do not agree with your views on this, but we will see

It's tough to develop a sustained identity and plan in just a few months with such a depleted side. I don't think even Poch would have been able to do that mid-season.

Remember that a huge problem at the time of Poch's departure was that we needed a new identity or plan, he himself was trying to build one but failing and not getting results along the way.

I see many are being so positive about him, and quite a few big enough to admit ‘it is working’. We are seven games unbeaten, and fifth, touching distance of top four, and still in FA cup/CL. A side bereft of major long term injuries, and more playing not fully fit.

I said it already, that many will be surprised by the new approach he developed whilst out the game. I think we are going to be very aggressive offensively and defensively, with super pace 2/3’s of the pitch. Imagine once he has the players he wants? Exciting times. Before you rate ‘optimistic’. When he took over and the mess we were in, there is no way any of us could imagine we would be in the position we are with all the handicaps.

come on, i know lucas and son are out of from! but tad harsh! :cautious:

I'm still unconvinced....

A lot of what you're written makes sense, but remember - Jose's only been in charge for 13 league games, came in a third of the way through the season, and has only just closed one transfer window

Pochettino was appointed in May 2014, so had a full off season and transfer window to get to know the squad, impose his ideas and playing style before the season started. Even then, by his own admission, he was a deflected Harry Kane free kick away from fearing for his job. His first season was a freebie (we finished 5th) so he could suss the squad and cut the deadwood, which he duly did.

Our displays were disjointed before JM took over, he's had a number of injuries to deal with, and a squad that clearly needed refreshing

Let's reserve judgement until he's had a similar period of time and circumstances as Poch

To quote Napoleon, I'd rather have a premier league manager who was lucky than one who was good - and there's no doubt JM has had a little bit of fortune so far. Long may it continue

Poch's team of the last 12 months lost it mojo, it's pressing, it's arrogance and Moussa Dembele...

I agree with you but it took Poch two years to get a team together and he had better ingredients than Mourinho has now. We will just have to wait it out and see how we start playing when we don’t have 4/5 starters out injured.

Poch was a relative unknown in terms of tactics and plan before he came here, so there was little negativity or baggage. Mourinho is a different proposition and whilst there is much to be admired, there is on the other hand the whole Man Utd experience, which some may worry will be repeated here.

I think the antipathy towards JM at United has been mitigated by the continued shower evident on the pitch and on the board. It's not like everything got better after he left, and he has plenty of credit in the bank given his record of success everywhere he goes.

He's still posting 50% more points per game than poch - only CIty and Liverpool have taken more since he came - so i don't look at United with too much trepidation. I'll judge him over the remainder of this season, and the start of next once he's had a pre-season to work with a squad

I already accepted that the football wasn't going to change much when jose took over. He needs a full summer transfer window and then we will see what happens next season. I know the football is hard to watch but as long as we win then i can deal with it.

As long as we get top 4 and have decent CL and FA cup run then I'll be satisfied especially after the season we have had.

The having possession for possession sake under Poch used to really frustrate me toward the end and I always felt we were better when teams came onto us.

I think we could potentially be a devastating counter attacking side under José. Its an unusual style for a 'big team' as most play variations of the same style and almost always dominate the ball, and it's weird for us as we've become so used to possession.

Given each player has possession of the ball for a small amount of time in a game, whilst it's clearly important what they do with it, what they do when they haven't got the ball is just as important. I really think José is trying to get us set up without the ball as best we can. We've got great attacking players when they're firing and José knows that, so I think he's trying to instill a change of approach for us out of possession which will let teams feel confident at coming at us. That's what he wants.

Is it working? Not 100% no. But what sets José apart from Poch is the trust and conviction he has in his in game management. Tactical tweaks, early substitutions, riding out pressure (maybe fortunately) but knowing you will go for it in the last 20 minutes and have the quality to hurt the opposition.

Do I feel more confident of winning something with José? 100000% yes.

It’s worth watching this:

And listening to this:

Different viewpoints on his time at Inter.

Winning is Jose’s foundation for his teams.

I’m happy to have him as our manager.

I just don't believe there is some new approach to be known about. And that reads as you now posting it as your opinion rather than your previous which read as if you had knowledge of it.

I very much doubt there is anything new or radical. That is pure PR guff to sell himself whilst his stock is low, the exact same things were said at United.....

All his teams have been slightly adapted within the same approach to the game. Defensively since his Porto days we're all aware of the park the bus stuff in crunch games and doing whatever it takes to win, but in smaller games it's more of a Liverpool based approach - drop a little, invite opposition up the pitch, then an aggressive determined press/squeeze and get it back and take advantage of them exposed to the counter.

With the ball it's always been about getting it forward fast and building rapid attacks against a destabilised opposition . Sometimes more into the target man like at Chelsea/Porto, or ground based quick passing interchanges like at Madrid and probably with us, especially sans Kane.

Stuff like the split mentality fullbacks where one attacks and one defends, and certain numbers/positions allowed to attack, are also things that all his teams have demonstrated.

He makes small adaptations to fit the team/personnel he has. It's what he has always done. But there is no way we are going to get some totally reinvented Jose-ball.

Don’t have the time to write a book but what I will say is that:

- I like Jose as a person, he says what he think about, not like Poch who called every performance for good ones, baffled by Poch

- His press conference is so intelligent and good

- I’m not convinced yet at all in his manager-skills, still part of me thinks he’s past it, but we will see

- I’m bored to dead watching us play at the moment, I’d almost rather not (but I still will)

- Getting dominated at home to Southampton with our squad I found - little embarrassing (credit to their manager though)

- Jose doesn’t have a new style, he doesn’t change his philosophy to Guardiola just because he has been away for a year, agree with @mpickard2087

- I’ll stand by him because he’s our manager, and I’m curious to see when all players are fit, and he has got the players he wants, how we’re going to play, but that won’t be till next season

- He deserves much credit to what he has achieved with this squad since his arrival

- I like that he acts fast in matches and not like a stubborn Poch
