Did we sell this kid, or is he on loan?

The reason I ask is that I have just watched the Asian Cup final where he scored a quality opener in Australia's win and was voted MVP for the entire tournament.

I did google him and Wikipedia says he is not with us.

If we have sold him I'd be interested to know why as, having watched the tournament, he looks quality.

Yea we sold him after he had a successful loan period at Swindon. Was a good goal, Swindon are currently top so he'll probably be in the championship next season one way or another.

Champion, player of the tournament, joint most assists (4), 2 goals
We should be proud of this one, shame we let him go, always looked a weird and hasten decision

Was too early, he was young and went for only 400k
Now he's worth ten times as much, should have loaned him out and watch how he develop.

Given he was part of the development group at the time I assume you mean Tim Sherwood?

Yup - he was applauded for making money from the academy, and did do some good work with a lot of players who would normally just rot and/or get released

At the time he seemed like an odd one to let go but I won't be too concerned unless he signs for Real Madrid for megabucks!

I can only assume that, as he was in, or close, to the national team, he wanted 1st team football and wasn't close at Spurs.

Shame, he looks a handful with plenty of ability too.

He would certainly have had the final say on whether he was ever likely to get a game; understandable that the lad chose to leave.

There are many things that can be blamed on AVB. This isn't one of them.

For all the potential that Luongo might have had, he was nowhere near ready for the first team of a Premier League club with aspirations to qualify for the Champions League.

Sherwood was responsible for the link with Swindon that saw a fair number of our players loaned or sold to them. So he was almost certainly responsible for Luongo's move too. But that doesn't mean that he has to be blamed either. Sometimes, the club just has to make difficult decisions. And they aren't always going to get it right.

Besides which, just because Luongo is playing well for Swindon and has had a good Asia Cup, it doesn't mean that the club necessarily got this one wrong.

"In fairness, he {Sherwood}'s a brilliant boss to have ... When I wanted a chance to play regularly he even helped me out with my move to Swindon … Moving to Swindon has been good for me. I wanted to be playing regularly and that's been the case at Swindon."

"The young guys trust him {Sherwood} and he gives them confidence - and trusts them. Under AVB, it was more about the big name players and not too many of the younger boys were given too much of a look in."

Luongo was always going to be a Premiership player. When we sold him he may not have been ready (though people said that about Kane and Bentaleb), but clearly he felt that as things stood at Spurs he would not ever be given the chance to prove that he was.

That changes nothing.

It was still the club's collective decision to agree to sell him.

And they wouldn't have done so if they truly believed that he was destined to be a top quality player.

And I repeat, it is still very far from certain that Spurs did get this one wrong. Time will tell.

Thanks for clearing that up Eddie.
