This is interesting,

Villarreal centre-back Mateo Musacchio is a transfer target for Spurs, according to reports in Spain.

The 23-year-old Argentina international is a key part of the Yellow Submarine squad.

New Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has been linked with moves for a number of his compatriots, and Musacchio is the latest.

The north Londoners have been tracking the defender for some time and have received very good scouting reports on him, claims Spanish newspaper AS.

While Pochettino is thought to be keen to strengthen his defence, the deal is being framed as one that would free up Jan Vertonghen to quit White Hart Lane and move to Barcelona.

Barca are keen to bolster their defence and Vertonghen has previously hinted that he would consider his future after the World Cup. He is known to be desperate to return to Champions League football.

BUY ALL THE ARGENTINIANS! :)

Nah to be fair he is a very experienced CB, especially for his age! Fast approaching 150 games for Villarreal!

Yeah from what I can recall he's a very good player but I haven't watched Villarreal much the last couple of years but he did look a player who was developing well. IIRC Ossie is a fan, I'm sure he'll give a decent view of him

Would love this, very experienced for his age and could form a nice partnership with Jan, then have Chiriches and this Dier fella at backup...

Falque is off to Genoa it seems.

Already gone to Genoa, or at least having a medical there

Thanks for that. Hadn't seen it.
Nice bit of squad trimming.
That's my biggest concern now, the outgoings.
I'd keep Naughton over the potential Lopes deal, homegrown.
I'd keep Rose, I think there is a player to be moulded there, with the right coaching, and again homegrown.
I'd keep Chiriches, skillful, young, promising first season.
I'd keep Holtby, got the engine and technical skills to flourish in Pochettino's system, likewise Capoue.
Personally, if we land Schneiderlin and Rodriguez, I'd be looking to clear out Dawson, Ekotto, Sandro and one of Paulinho/Dembele, probably Paulinho as despite him only having one season, and being capable of giving us goals from midfield, I just think our other midfielders offer us greater options.

Sounds promising then and I personally think this is the target JJ is referring to. Be interesting to see what prices are being quoted.

Southampton loan for Chiriches as makeweight for Schneiderlin and bringing this guy in as first choice could be a masterstroke (vital PL experience for Vlad and a chance to prove his worth to the club).

This guy is very good. Reads the game excellently, great in the air, good on the ball and even has a good turn of pace and is pretty well built. I think he'd do well in the premier league. I'd be delighted if we got him but it does seem like just paper talk unfortunately. Hasn't Jan already said he'd like to stay with us? That sort of makes call BS, on this report at least

There's a good chance that the reports of our interest in the player are true and to flesh out the article the journalists used old news and assumptions about Verts being off. In reality its Dawson that'll be gone.

I think we need to remember that the CB's we will be looking at don't just have to be of a decent quality, they also have to have the attributes to play in Poch's system. That seems to be pace for a high line and the ability to play the ball from the back. Poch may well have this guy in mind as being more suitable for this system then daws/Vlad.

Just out of curiosity, what makes you think there's a good chance the link to Musacchio? I think he's perfectly suited to Pochetinno's system personally but it's getting hard to believe any link to Argentinian players now, even if this does make more sense than most of them

I don't think a club like Villareal without giving it very much thought, can refuse a bid around £15-20M. Villareal is one of the few clubs in spain who is run correctly and doesn't have loads of debts. If we bid, say £18M, I have a hard time seeing them saying no.

I'd love us to sign this guy, a complete defender with good leadership abilitys.

Well they only have a 25k capacity styadium and Villarreal itself is only a small place. They only made La Primera about 12 years back and did really well all things considered and even though they got relegated they bounced back well
For all they have done well though they are not a wealthy club so a decent bid should give them cause to consider it, no short contract though it appears Musacchio's runs till 2018
